GrΓ½la" is a digital collage made by the Clayshaper in 2026. Based on "Portrait of an Old Woman", attributed to JosΓ© de Brito before 1946.

Dwelling deep under Iceland's Dimmuborgir lava fields, the ogress Grýla occasionally comes out to hunt for disobedient children. With roots dating back to the 13th century, and later being associated with Yule-traditions, Grýla is a fascinating monster. This piece is inspired by a similar piece by ÞrÑndur Þórarinsson.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps:

- It’s β€˜voilΓ ,’ not β€˜wallah!’
- It’s β€˜a lot,’ not β€˜alot.’
- It’s β€˜further ado,’ not β€˜farther adieu.’
- It’s β€˜flesh out,’ not β€˜flush out.’
- It’s β€˜sneak peek,’ not β€˜sneak peak.’

No worries if not!!!

Panel 1

It's a pleasant day at kindergarten. Ember is chatting with Bolero and Grace about raisins and Teacher seems to be straightening up some things. He's carrying a box of salt. Why? I don't know. The teachers in this city are weird. Don't question it. Along the wall is a banner that has "THE ALPHABET" and "NUMBERS" written across it several times. The actual words, not the alphabet and numbers. Someone was yelled at over this.

Teacher (thinking): Ember has been behaving all day.

Ember: RAISINS!

Panel 2

Teacher narrows his eyes and watches the situation carefully.

Teacher (thinking): She's up to something.

Teacher doesn't want Ember to know that he's onto her and plans to continue acting as if he hasn't noticed anything.

Panel 3

Bolero begins to speak but Ember can't pay attention because she's distracted by Teacher. She looks up at him and carefully considers the situation.

Ember (thinking): TEACHER HASN'T BEEN UPSET WITH ME TODAY.

Panel 4

Ember narrows her eyes and has a realization.

Ember (thinking): HE'S UP TO SOMETHING.

Ember continues to do nothing so that Teacher will not suspect that she's onto him.

Angled view down on a horror montage set upon a red tinted, textured skull topped by a trio of rose blooms. Low in the immediate foreground one orbital reflects the glint of light on an eyeball. Nested low on the forehead a bat opens its maw wide in a scream. Set to the side is a tile with the number 3 and a creeping spider. Opposite rests a small stack of coins, the topmost decorated with a triangle. Smoke wafts out of a crack at the top back of the skull while tendrils of roots grow off the opposite side.

A bare-chested figure with jaundiced face and thinning hair steps out to offer a Halloween surprise. His head is cartoonishly bulbous with enormous ears set too far back on his skull. He presents as a frightening clown stripped of paint. His face tapers from high, hollow cheeks to pointed chinβ€”jaw barely containing the crescent of wide upturned lips. His bulging eyes, dotted to pinpricks, are disturbingly unfocused as some psychotic fantasy plays out in his mind. With fingers slender and taloned, he offers an oversized lollipop pinched delicately at the stem. A black spider with shiny red abdomen is set in the spiral of amber candy proffered.

Panel 1

August and Gustopher are out shopping when they notices a Halloween display. Gustopher is instantly excited about Halloween coming up.

Gustopher: DAD! Halloween is coming!

August: It is!

Panel 2

August has been planning to make this year more exciting.

August: Since your taco costume was cheap last year, I think we should go big this time! What do you want to be?

Panel 3

Gustopher contemplates the choices with his hands to his side. Unrelated, but he's wearing his Sweater that says Sweater. It's a spin off of the Shirt Shirts but they haven't been quite as popular. People say that the Clothing Clothing company has sold out and they're just in it for the money.

Anyway, various ideas swirl around Gustopher's head. Including Vampire, Super hero, ghost, copyright infringement, space marine, lamp, and banana. Two names in the corner are slight obscured. They seem to say Adam Tots and Hollering Elk. Could be something else. I guess we'll never know.

Panel 4

After some careful considering, Gustopher knows exactly what he wants to be.

Gustopher: I wanna be a taco again!

August: Really? Are you sure?

Gustopher: TACO! TACO! TACO!

Yesterday we visited Green Mountain Falls, CO to visit the kinetic sculpture Off the Beaten Path by Patrick Shearn. I wasn’t ready for just how dynamic it was even in the slightest breeze. Reminds me of a murmuration of starlings. Incredible artwork. It’ll only be up through October 19th.
