Two differently coloured Oak Beauties from the other night. One of the smartest spring moths! Seems to be getting commoner around here. Took 8 years to catch my first, and only seven records in the last 14 years, but have already had four this year. #teammoth #MothsMatter #YorkshireMoths

Yorkshire Moths Review 2025
Yorkshire Moths Review 2025 YouTube video by Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire

The recording of Charlie Fletcher's review of the 2025 Moth year is now available. Its been another very busy moth year with record number of moths a lots of new earliest and latest recorded dates let alone record abundance for hundreds of species... Phew! youtu.be/-s8RWBO-_nI

This drab form of Calybites phasianipennella was a bit of a surprise on 25 February. The adult overwinters, but this appears to be the 'earliest' Yorkshire record. #TeamMoth #MothsMatter @doublekidney.bsky.social

Blimey! I've caught three moths so far this year. The difference between north vs. south (and garden vs. decent habitat) in the late winter/early spring still surprises me every year!

The first moth of the year last night and it was new for my garden: Ypsolopha ustella. Not particularly common in Yorkshire and new for my 10k square by the look of it. #TeamMoth #MothsMatter @doublekidney.bsky.social

It's in Yorkshire, but very patchy. I've been checking numerous holm oaks in East Yorkshire for years, but only found it in four locations.

I've been checking holm oaks in East Yorkshire (VC 61) for #leafmines since 2013, but had only recorded Ectoedemia heringella near the Humber Estuary. I found a few near Beverley last year though and loads in Hull today. I last checked this tree in 2022. #TeamMoth @doublekidney.bsky.social

I've finally finalised my moth records from 2025 and had a surprising (since I've been trapping here since 2013) 31 species new for the garden. Six were macros: Four-spotted Footman, Mullein, Small Marbled and Bordered Straw, plus Latticed Heath and Purple Bar. #TeamMoth @doublekidney.bsky.social
