Can democracy promotion still work where terrorism is pervasive?
A common assumption is that insecurity pushes citizens toward authoritarian “strongmen”. Our new research tests whether that is actually true.
On 27 February 2026, we are hosting a one-day workshop in Glasgow on opposition to electoral authoritarian regimes, with a particular focus on local governance.

I’m very pleased that our article is now online at @bjpols.bsky.social! This was an ambitious project that involved data collection across more than 30 countries. Our findings offer insights into the vulnerabilities of popular democratic support in the face of electoral authoritarianism.
My wish for 2026 is that politicians and political analysts realize that public opinion is endogenous to elite behavior, that polling single issues tells us nothing about electorally successful strategies, that politics means shaping public opinion and that popularism is the death of progressivism.

Reports tonight that, following unprecedented intl pressure, Israel is going to facilitate a dramatic increase in aid, water supply, and aid-drop food by Israeli airforce (that has not happened before).
For many in Gaza on the brink of death, this may prove too little too late.
Do sanction threats work? We find that threats—even if credibly backed—do not increase support for concessions in the target public (Turkiye case). Plus, positive inducements provoke backlash in some groups, highlighting coercive diplomacy’s limits

Aralarında gazetecilerin ve iktidara muhalif gençlerin de yer aldığı adli kontrol ile takip edilen kişi sayısı, 1 Temmuz itibarıyla 119 bin 413’e ulaştı.
This would mean a figure roughly equivalent to the military and civilian casualties in WWI.

The guardian: analysis- Strikes on Iran ease pressure on Israel to end starvation in Gaza by Emma graham-Harrison. Critics of war will be more reluctant to press for its end while missiles from Tehran are killing people in Tel Aviv.

Hundreds of former Afghan commandos & their families were refused relocation by a UK Special Forces officer with possible links to a war crimes enquiry where they could’ve been witnesses.
At least five were later murdered by the Taliban.
The MoD then lied about this to Parliament & the courts.
US weapons still at work in Gaza.
The refusal of this administration (like the previous one) to enforce the LOAC-based legal restrictions on US arms transfers to Israel is also a rule of law issue.
