Scripps Oceanography glaciologist @helen-amanda.bsky.social studies the fastest-changing places on Earth to understand how melting ice and rising seas impact communities everywhere. We caught up with the celebrated scientist to learn more about her work and why it matters now more than ever. ‡οΈ

Include individual US states in the worldβs biggest economies & itβs impressive that Ireland ranks 38th. To go from one of the poorest in Europe in 50y is impressive*. There are only 5.2m on the island which explains Ireland being one of the richest countries per capita in the world.
This is truly joyful!
"President Donald Trump's approach to climate change rests on one key premise: Greenhouse gases are not that bad.
This is a simple argumentβalbeit one that flies in the face of the scientific consensus on climate changeβbut it could have profound consequences," writes Jake Bittle.
Just in case it wasn't obvious that Trump's energy policies make no sense, except for his cronies:

Researchers "overjoyed" #NASA is going to move forward with two new $355 million Earth science satellites. One watching stratosphere, one watching ice/forests.π§ͺ My latest for @science.org:
He needs to read the room. Or the stadium. Or the country. Or the world.
This riskβnow this realityβ was clearly foreseen 20 years ago when in first started working on climate change, and warnings were givenβ but no one wanted to hear them and some fought to belittle the Cassandras. So many Americans are now trapped in a terrible position as a result.

Significant news out of NASA earth science: They've finally selected two new missions for its explorers competed line, cost capped at $335M: EDGE, a next-gen lidar and successor to Icesat-2/GEDI, and STRIVE, a limb sounder for pollution and more and much-needed successor to Aura.

Here, we chart the five big themes for US science in 2026:
- The budget showdown
- Battle over 'indirect' or administrative costs
- Political appointees gain power, deprioritizing scientific merit
- University reforms
- International student decline

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

(i) Greenland is not a piece of ice; it is one of Earth's two ice sheets. The other one is Antarctica. Ice sheets gain mass through snowfall and lose it again via iceberg calving and basal melting.
(ii) Iceland is not Greenland. 2/3

Will cover three things: (i) Greenland, (ii) Iceland and (iii) the Titanic, and how they relate and don't relate. 1/3

I'm at a local gym and a Kristi Noem ad about Trump's immigration policies came over the radio. I went to tell the front desk and they looked alarmed and said they would take care of it and change stations straight away. Speak up when you hear that crap.
