I'm also aware that not everyone can do this. We were very lucky and played our cards right. The only reason we had a downpayment was because the wife gets a cash subsidy every 5 years from a car accident settlement from her childhood.

We also still had to shovel our own driveway and mow our lawn then too. It really does depend on where you live.
