your moment of calm: sea potatoes! potatoes of the sea!

Photos are all mine. 𧑠Portland 𧑠Books, bikes, photos, dogs, donuts, but that's not my whole personality. I don't fix typos. I'm careless that way. Resist! Persist! Insist!

Powell's City of Books, Sunday, Mar 8, 7pm, two author photos and the cover of Now I Surrender. Extended description below: Orchestrated with a stunningly imagined cast of characters, both historical and purely fictional, Now I Surrender (Riverhead) radically recasts the story of how the West was βwon.β In the contested borderlands between Mexico and the United States, a woman flees into the desert after a devastating raid on her dead husbandβs ranch. A lieutenant colonel in service to the fledgling Republic, sent in pursuit of cattle rustlers, discovers heβs on the trail of a more dramatic abduction. Decades later, with political ambitions on the line, the American and Mexican militaries try to maneuver Geronimo, the most legendary of Apache warriors, into surrender. In our own day, a family travels through the region in search of a truer version of the past. Part epic, part alt-Western, Now I Surrender is Γlvaro Enrigueβs most expansive and impassioned novel yet. It weaves past and present, myth and history into a searing elegy for a way of life that was an incarnation of true liberty β and an homage to the spark in us that still thrills to its memory. Enrigue will be joined in conversation by Jeff VanderMeer, author of the Southern Reach series.

I watched a couple of nominated short films with @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social and this one stood out for me. I went in knowing nothing, and decided to stay bc it is important to not turn away from things going on around us. I do not regret watching this short film.
And is still trying.

Based on an Ivan Turgenev story so how could I not? The opening, dipping in and out of conversations took me a minute to get into. After that, though ... was not expecting that!
