Rethinking microglia from a circadian perspective in neuroimmunology: New insights - PubMed Rethinking microglia from a circadian perspective in neuroimmunology: New insights

Microglia don’t act the same around the clock! Their transcriptional/proteomic/functional programs shift across sleep/wake phases - yet most studies ignore time-of-day. This perspective calls for a circadian rethink in neuroimmunology!

April is #Parkinson's awareness month! PD is the second most common #neurodegenerative disease. Below you see two sections of human midbrain processed in our lab, where you can see the hallmark of PD: #Dopaminergic neuronal death in the SNpc, from where I sort intact #microglia for MultiOmics.

Indeed! This likely reflects inter-species differences in neurodevelopmental complexity, and hence the need for microglia to assist it.

Microglia are key players in neurodevelopment. It is thus essential to include them in brain organoids to study neurodevelopment, especially to study prenatal immune activation and how it impacts such a delicate process. Thrilled to have participated to this beautiful study. shorturl.at/7M9DU

Any researcher here also looking into glia circadian differences in disease models? Eager to connect amd discuss! We study glia in disease and physiology, but mostly during rodent's sleep phase, as they're often hosted in a light:dark cycle. Hence, are we looking at only half of the picture?

Beautiful work! Were animals hosted in a light:dark cycle? We recently showed that many DAM and plaque-associated microglia genes change between the light and dark phase. I wonder what we would see if we extended this kind of transcriptional profiling of microglia to both phases. shorturl.at/icWJD

Furthermore, diurnal variations in microglial features may account for within- and between-study variability. Reporting the Zeitgeber time at which microglia are collected may improve reproducibility and comparability of results.
