New York has long been a place where people fleeing violence, persecution, and instability can rebuild their lives with dignity. Investing in refugee services means helping families find housing, jobs, education, and stability so they can fully contribute to our communities.

We should be clear about what this means. When authorities act this way, it signals a dangerous erosion of democratic norms and a growing tolerance for intimidation over legality.

There must be real accountability for what happened. These remarks were abhorrent, and removing her from the classroom during the investigation is a good first step. She should be fired. Alongside Chelsea Neighbors United, I joined neighbors calling on the Hudson River Park Trust to immediately end its contract with ICE allowing vehicles to park at Pier 40, in view of the Statue of Liberty. Waiting until June is unacceptable. Our parks should never be used to intimidate communities.
