Poster for trip. Text reads βThe 12th-13th century Cistercian Abbey of Strata Florida in Ceredigion is built from imported stone in addition to the local greywackes. Some of these freestones were also used for Llanbadarn church.
Morning: Strata Florida Abbey. Introduction to the local and building stone geology by Tim and Ruth. We will then explore the abbey site to identify the different stone types in situ and their reuse in later buildings.
Lunch Picnic at Strata Florida or lunch at The Black Lion, Pontrhydfendigaid.
Afternoon: Llanbadarn Church. Imported stones are also seen in the fabric of the church. The interior also reveals a C12th Purbeck marble font, and a C10th Celtic stone carved from granodiorite from Cader Idris.
Logistics Strata Florida is 19 miles from Aberystwyth and best visited by car. A taxi ride for 4 people from Aberystwyth railway station to Strata Florida would take 1β2 hour and cost approximately Β£40. A return taxi to Llanbardarn Fawr would cost a similar amount. The church is a 25 minute walk from the railway station.
