Kind of a shame they didn't bring this back; AC7 just had a really boring deathmatch mode

And honestly, I had a lot of fun playing it while the servers were still up! Even if your team "loses", if you collectively beat the boss in stage 2 it still feels like you accomplished something. Making the other team allied rivals rather than opponents made the experience a lot more pleasant imo

3) Same as the first round, but now there's also high-value targets with increased stats. This is where you can rack up score (especially if the boss got away) and you really see people trying to snipe targets from the opposing team. Once time rins out here, the match is over

2) The meat of the match. It's a bossfight, either against a big machine like the Scinfaxi, or a showdown with one of the series' ace squadrons.
You have limited time to defeat the boss, so this is where rivalries get (mostly) tabled. Once the boss is down or time runs out you go to the final stage

The maps themselves are populated with NPC opponents, and each match goes through 3 stages:

1) A warmup round, mostly just basic opponents in the air and on the ground. You feel things out and get to see your rivals in action. Once enough time has passed, the game moves to the next stage

Basically, I would describe it as "head-to-head co-op": you are split randomly in 2 squads and have to complete objectives on a shared map. Team with the highest score at the end wins.
You can't actually shoot members of the other team since you are working together in the fiction.

Seeing people talking about games with miserable multiplayer experiences and all I can think of is how Ace Combat Infinity had probably the best multiplayer design of any Ace Combat game (ignoring the fuel mechanic, which sucked ass)
