John Sweeney: Blaming Met ร‰ireann for floods is a distraction. Who rezoned the floodplains? It is now over 20 years since I led the project to give the first scenario-based projections of Irelandโ€™s future climate. We warned Irelandโ€™s winters would become significantly wetter

When it rains, it now rains more.

For those experiencing the flooding in south-west England, it is worth remembering that rainfall in winter has increased by about 25% overall.

And, the rainfall has also become more intense: when it rains, it now rains more, increasing the risk of flooding.

NEW: Air traffic growth is not a guarantee of economic growth, despite industry claims.

These claims, often echoed by governments to justify airport expansion, are undermined by new research.

An extraordinary omission.

Yes, policy is the domain of Gov, but climate is one area where a President, limited though their powers may be, could actually play a significant role, e.g. by mobilising community action and lifting the voices of people affected.

Hereโ€™s a ๐Ÿงต on why this argument frustrates me to no end and why I think it misses the bigger picture.

This from the climate minister? How grim. Oโ€™Brien either has his head in the clouds or is being intentionally misleading. Sustainable Aviation Fuels made up 0.3% of jet fuel last year; they're far too expensive and difficult to scale to play any significant role in the foreseeable future.

Historic heatwave unfolding in France.

In a new piece for @granthamicl.bsky.social, @frediotto.bsky.social and I unpack the significance of the ICJโ€™s landmark advisory opinion.

We reflect on how it reshapes the legal framing of climate action and what it means for statesโ€™ obligations going forward.

25.07.2025 15:11 ๐Ÿ‘ 12 ๐Ÿ” 6 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

Three key takeaways:
- Fossil fuel subsidies and licensing can now constitute internationally wrongful acts
- The 1.5ยฐC limit is no longer aspirational - it's a legal obligation
- States cannot hide behind "concurrent causes" to avoid climate reparations

Good news is somewhat of a rarity in the climate space, so it's genuinely uplifting to see how advances in climate science are making it possible to hold big emitters to account in the courts.
