Thanks for reading and the thoughtful response, Sam. I think I agree, and perhaps this also partially accounts for some of the attempts to 'renew' Marxist art history post-2008. (Seen from the Anglophone context, perhaps also having arisen out of a dissatisfaction with 'Visual Cultures'?)
