Do y'all think it's a coincidence that after the SAVE Act failed to pass, which was a voter suppression act, Trump decides to ILLEGALLY declare war against Iran? He wants to use emergency powers to declare executive power over elections.

I wrote THE POISONS WE DRINK angry. Black folk doing what’s needed for progress, even when it made us look like monsters, was the point. Making anger sentient was a choice. Defiance looks evil from the wrong side or the sidelines of a revolution.

Rest in peace, Rev. Jesse Jackson

Although THE POISONS WE DRINK is about love potions, there's real, complicated, messy love between Venus and Presley. If you like "Black bi and pan enby couple doing crimes" rep for a V-Day book rec, might I recommend my little pink book? ☺️

Considering which books and authors they choose to invest $$$$$ in while BIPOC authors get left in the dust, A+B=C.

And to me, that's the gospel truth.

When we critique or speak of trad pub, it's often viewed as this faceless Goliath but the truth is beneath its thin skin, white women are its backbone and lifeblood. We tiptoe around this, but that's what it is. And considering how toxic the industry is toward BIPOC authors, 1+1=2.

They predominantly make up the agents, editors, and other publishing roles. Book marketing caters to white women, even for BIPOC books. Who gets through the gate oftentimes depends largely on if enough white women within literary agencies and publishing houses like you and your book enough.

There's good convo on Threads about gatekeepers in trad publishing and I want to put what I've said there on here too:

A friend said that publishing isn't a meritocracy. I agreed, then said publishing is a white matriarchy. White women are the gatekeepers and kingmakers of trad pub.

In THE POISONS WE DRINK, there's 8 love potions. Venus is known for Peitho potions, which make you fall for ideas. In DC, ideas become laws. Laws hold power over witchers. And power is more dangerous than magic.

Maybe, this book is your preferred poison? 😘

Imagine a country where its president posts a video of a Black former president and his Black wife as monkeys during Black History Month to the masses.

Still not enough to invoke Article II, Section 4 though, lol. To terrified white folk, inclusivity is the meteor that killed the dinosaurs.

In 2017, I was writing POISONS and decided I wanted familiars in my book's world. I decided that the Stoneheart family NEEDED a familiar and without hesitation, I immediately knew who that familiar would be.

So, Patch the Pumpkin Patch Kitten lives on in Patches the Stoneheart familiar.

Me and my BFF slept the night with her at the friends house who threw the Halloween party. Then we took her to her new family. We had a long convo with the family before we handed her off. It was a match. They loved her. She loved them. We drove away but I never forgot that little cat.

So, I put an ad up on Craigslist. The ad no longer exists but I still have the responses from it. A military family just moved to the area and wanted a pet. The wife reached out. We spoke on the phone but agreed to bring Patch to see if they were a good fit for her.

Because she had a patch on her chest and we found her in a pumpkin patch, we named her Patch. But unfortunately, no one could take her. I couldn't take her. I lived with my parents and my mom was allergic to cats. My friend couldn't take her. He already had several cats.

We were all worried she'd get hit by a car because the church was near a busy road. She was glued to us, so we took her. We went to a Halloween party, hoping to give her to a friend or a friend of a friend. She was a hit at the Halloween party.

I need pumpkins for some math and science activities. As we wandered the patch, we saw a little black kitten with a white patch, following people and playing in the pumpkins. We asked the workers if she belonged to anyone. They said no.

He's been with the family for 151 years. Some readers love him down! But he's actually inspired by a REAL Patches.

On Halloween 2015, my BFF & I went to a church pumpkin patch. It was my first year teaching kindergarten. I need pumpkins for some math and science activities.

STORY TIME!

In my book, THE POISONS WE DRINK, many witchers have familiars. Most familiars are youngins, but some are old and remain with a family through generations. They're called antique familiars. Patches, the Stoneheart familiar, is a black cat with a white heart patch on his chest.
