Women in the EMGS SIG - Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society The mission of the Women in EMGS (WEMGS) Special Interest Group (SIG) is to provide a forum for discussion on the specific challenges faced by women in our society, a place for EMGS members of any sex interested in this topic to meet and share with one another, and an organized effort to share our experiences and support each other. Women in all fields of science have encountered barriers due to both negative stereotypes leading to being dismissed more easily as scientists, as well as societal pressures to perform more uncompensated and unrecognized work both in the workplace and at home. For both sexes, expectations in science have been at odds with the fulfillment of responsibilities outside of work (e.g. caregiving) and the nurturing of healthy and meaningful human relationships.The main event sponsored by WEMGS is a luncheon at the annual EMGS meeting. This luncheon may feature, for example, an invited speaker or a group discussion. Relevant activities of this SIG may also include, but are not limited to, planning and sponsoring symposia, platform sessions, breakfast meetings, social events, and workshops for the EMGS Annual Meeting, and updating members about the latest news through the EMGS website and email forum. Overall, this SIG provides a platform for members from all sectors (academia, industry, and government agencies) to discuss issues of importance to the WEMGS members and provide support to each other.
