I believe this kind of technology is also using an AI model which recognize the shape of the body and face to extract them.
Another technique could be to use a luma key (it's like green screen, but based on luminance). But your background and foreground must have a pretty good luminance difference.
Unfortunately, you most certainly have to roto your subject frame by frame.
Nowadays there are tools that can help you speed up the process : the Roto Brush in After Effects or the Magic Mask in the studio version of DaVinci.
There's also some AI tools to do that, but... it's AI.

And the way the game lets you create a natural physical and emotional bond without ever forcing anything is absolute masterful work.
Never seen something like this before in a game and I think we won't see an equivalent for a long while.
Replayed an hour of it yesterday. Ten years after, I'm still in awe. It's incredible. The way Trico interacts with its surroundings, both physically and with its behavior is truely spectacular.
It's always a good time to remember that The Last Guardian is a tremendously bold game and Trico is one hell of a technical achievement in video game history.
Can't wait to see what Fumito Ueda and all the folks at genDesign are cooking!
All these numbers tell me that my combat system works, and that makes me feel very pog indeed ๐

Didn't post in a while BUT I've been working on the game and actually coded a new mechanic.

My creative process is pretty consistent:
- postpone starting because I'm nervous it'll be bad
- look at tens of references
- start
- it is actually bad
- throw everything away
- take a break for a day or two
- come back to it
- start again
- hey, it's not that bad!
