β€˜A real dark situation to be in’: thousands of starving seabirds stranded in biggest β€˜wreck’ in a decade Puffins, guillemots, razorbills and terns are washing up on shores across Europe, after a string of storms affected their ability to find food

#BlackGuillemots are widely distributed #seabirds, nesting under rocks along coastlines, which makes surveying an entire population challenging.

This project is a great example of #CommunityBasedMonitoring that will support the assessment of #guillemot populations in the UK!

Really interesting #PhD opportunity combining #LocalEcologicalKnowledge and #science to better understand changes in #seabird distributions over time in the context of #InvasiveSpecies.

Living and working in the #Arctic means lots of frozen eyelashes as I walk around town.

I am so grateful to work in both #Nunavut and the #NorthwestTerritories, visiting the most beautiful places and meeting incredible people in every community.

I wouldn’t have it any other way! πŸ§Šβ„οΈ

What a great #CitizenScience initiative to better understand #BlackGuillemot populations in Ireland!

We should consider something similar for the Canadian #Arctic, where we know little about Black #Guillemots across their range.

Spatial overlap alone downplays the level of interaction between a central place forager and the local fishery While spatial overlap is commonly used to quantify interactions, it may underestimate the true degree of competition between foraging predators and fishing vessels. New research introduces β€œoverlap intensity”, a metric that goes beyond area shared by #seabirds and #fishing vessels to include how many #birds are affected, showing stronger competition for prey than overlap metrics alone.

A useful tool for #fisheries management and #MarineProtectedArea planning!
