I feel that way about the mandatory online cyber security training every two years. The sams identical one.
Latest article together with a great team on user behavior, dog whistles, and explicit antisemitism on Qanon subreddits. How does antisemitism actually "work." Stay tuned. More to come: www.mdpi.com/2078-2489/17...
βChinaβs gaokao factories and Americaβs college-industrial complex are not accidents. They are the logical outcome of a global system that has mistaken education for investment and human life for capital.β

Shout-out to Trump as a patrimonial ruler in today's FT.
Another shout-out to your book, @jeffkopstein.bsky.social, this time in FT
You underestimate how vital national interests can be reverse engineered by the fertile theoretical imagination.
The U.S. has surpassed 2000 documented measles cases this year, the highest in more than 30 years.
This is driven by rampant disinformation about vaccines from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., including in his capacity as a government official.
We will lose our elimination status shortly.
I like the think of those letter as having been put up on Velcro.
He landed in red square and said "if a German in a frickin' Cessna can do it, so can I."
Skocpol on The Assault on the State
Did you see the new yorker piece on relocating to the netherlands?
At my age it's publish AND perish π€£
We all need to slow down. Not work less (at this point, i'm powerless to do so), but much more deliberately. The incentive structures don't help (the "tyranny of metrics" as Jerry Mueller calls it) but AI has taken "productivity" to its logical and absurd conclusion.
It's about time
In time for Hanukah/Christmas, Foreign Affairs includes "The Assault on the State," a book I wrote with Steve Hanson, on its list of best books of 2025.

These are the kinds of updates I need.
The grant money?
A very sensitive reading of "The Assault on the State."
We feel it in our bones... "with each concession, autocrats become bolder, defenses grow weaker, and reversal becomes harder. Responses that, early on, can feel pragmaticβwaiting it out, remaining silent, cutting a dealβonly embolden autocrats, leading ultimately to the demise of democracy itself."
But there's the issue of students with accommodations.
Theres no bowing. There's also no more papers. Just in class assignments. Once you've solved the problem of me grading dozens of chatgpt papers (which i refuse to do), let me know. Then we can go back to education. Until then its blue books and essay. I also want to do communist style oral exams!
Can't one of the methods convert? for the sake of the parents.
You and your bourgeois arithmetic. Wrecker
Cornell University Press will soon release a well-priced paperback version of "Intimate Violence: Anti-Jewish Pogroms on the Eve of the Holocaust," a book I wrote with Jason Wittenberg. Unfortunately, it still speaks to important questions of our day. (link in first comment)
My sense is it's an over used word, bordering on an empty signifier at this point.
