It already is. There’s no such thing as a job anymore. It’s all contract labor. The first thing on the contract is the company reserves the right to terminate your contract at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, or no reason at all.

There's endless articles about how it's highly unethical or a scam for trade publishers to ask for money from authors to cover production costs, but it has become the new standard. It's pay to play. If I had $20K burning a hole in my pocket, the book would be in stores today.

Remembering in hindsight, over the course of nearly a year there was almost no talk about the photos themselves or the project. It was mostly about their “risk” in issuing the book, and how much money I was willing to spend to cover their own production expenses.

The breakwater in the foreground was placed after Hurricane Ida, which did as much damage to this area as Katrina.
