Here’s a timelapse of a 90 minute alla prima study. Belted Kingfisher, Limited palette study using phthalo blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber, india yellow, and white. 6x8 oil on panel, toned first with some reddish brown acrylic paint.

Here is a 4 painting series of owls from 2022. Inspired by traditional Baroque and Renaissance paintings, and chiaroscuro portrait techniques, I approached these paintings as if they were portraits of people, with lighting, mood, and expression adding to the drama. 12x12 oil on canvas

Another technique is duplicating the paper background, making it the first layer, switching it to “soft light” mode, and decreasing transparency to around 20% and now you have the paper texture on top of your brush strokes

Thank you! I try to approach my digital work the same way the I approach traditional, as far as technique, values, and textures. One thing that helps is traditional charcoal and pastel brush packs for procreate. And using hi res paper textures for the background.
