we don't make enough about the Valorant parts of Marathon but I see the Valorant parts of Marathon

they got the guy who directed a populist take on Counter-Strike (Valorant) to direct the populist take on Tarkov (Marathon) and some people are still surprised

faction agents in marathon have a way to make you feel like a special little boy and I'm not even talking about Nona, I just had the speech for getting Arachne rank 7 and Charter was like "wow son you're good at killing people I dig your style"

and doesn't that demonstrate, once more, as ever through this game, that you can't isolate yourself from the world, that it's not a matter of "should we connect" but rather "you were connected all along"

but then, through some back and forth, you go to the Pizza Chef, special appearance by Mamoru Oshii, and you find out that actually bad guys have taken over his place and use his pizzas to smuggle guns across Australia; so you delivered guns to someone by mistake and they love you for it

later on in the in-game instagram feed you discover that the pizzas have a hidden compartment in which there are guns; she LOVES it; and that's a weird punchline on its own

so there's this character called the data scientist, played by usada pekora, and her story is she made these smart mines that people kept misusing so she doesn't trust others; you unlock her by bringing her pizza

friend is playing death stranding two: on the beach and I just noticed something that is *hilarious*

I think it's a cool system where the value of a business is entirely decorrelated to the goods it produces and is instead set by fucking psycho cokeheads doing fake shit with fake money

tbh my problem with marathon is blue backpacks need to be WAY MORE COMMON

I like that for the most part Marathon has no soundtrack EXCEPT in Outpost where it pulls off the ambient stuff

went into outpost with a serious loadout and had an entirely too modest run, however holy fucking shit that place gets weird

it's genuinely incredible that the story has ebb and flow despite being in a found document format

it's like "here's this log of [REDACTED], here's this report about [REDACTED]; it's all fine, nothing to look at here, nothing's weird (everything is very fucking weird)" and then HOW FUCKED UP IS IT? TUNE BACK IN AT NUCAL LEVEL 16

the thing about MARATHON is that its storytelling is so good it found a way to have a goddamn CLIFFHANGER
