My bad, you asked how consciousness *works*, not what it *is*. The effects described above emerge from: 1) our heritage as social animals means we have a very good ability to build mental models of others, 2) we're also very good at general mapping from one pattern to another
1) the ability of the mind to conceive of "itself" as an entity in the world model it inhabits;
2) the ability to distinguish between external stimuli and those issuing from "itself";
3) the ability to iterate on internal stimuli, effectively "think about thinking".
