We are happy to announce the first workshop in our new series: Back to Basics!
The goal of this series is to take a fresh look at the basic assumptions held in our field.
In the first workshop, we will ask the most fundamental question: What is a neuron?

On this graph we also see that animals spend less time close to bright shapes less when "Kikki" goes on repeat from a speaker, suggesting that this sound indeed is for some reason stressful for them. Mystery solved? Or am I missing something?

Here we can see that this "innate" preference is visible when sound "Bubba" is playing in the background, but disappears when the sound is "Kikki". 3/4

Am I right that this paper just shows that 1) chicks have a basic preference for round shapes, 2) this preference disappears when a stress-evoking sound is being played in the background? 1/4

What irritates me a lot in Cobbs' biography of Crick is that every time any appaling views of him are mentioned, we are spoon-fed an assurance that it was TYPICAL OF THE ERA, this paragraph being probably the most absurd case.

I am pretty sure there is a special place in hell for Western media headline writers.
The deliberate and painstaking effort to whitewash genocide requires a special talent that only total moral emptiness can produce.

I see, but I think that the title kind of reinforces a wrong way of thinking about the evolution in general (and many people will see the title and not read the book!)

The conservative bias of life scientists
Life scientists may think of themselves as liberal, but they seem to have a strong conservative bias that negatively impacts diversity in research. Thβ¦
But a propos the title: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
"The bias can be revealed with a Google Scholar search; "conserved from" AND "to humans" appear over 27,000 times, yet the reverse, βconserved from humans toβ is found fewer than 800 times"

I've seen Professors attacked by right-wing culture warriors (Gad Saad, ect) who used the mantle of "free speech" to demonize speech they didn't like. Now these folks are celebrating forced disappearance...for speech. They eroded the meaning of words because they don't have the truth on their side.
