Julia child using a mandoline bare handed, she's slicing a potato that's maybe a quarter inch thick. Closed captions read "there's one that needs evening"
Watching Julia Child use a mandoline bare handed, truly this woman would have faced God and walked backwards into hell

85 schoolgirls. just one is a world, a future of infinite possibilities, a universe. that america has done this atrocity to 85 of them, that it will continue to do even worse... i don't even know what to say. i condemn this with every fiber of my being, but that doesn't feel like enough.

zoom on a web browser, with an arrow pointing to "AI Companion" and the first 3 of many AI features listed
PSA to my fellow Zoom users -- it's automatically turned on a bunch of A.I. features without asking youβοΈ
to turn all 32 of them off, go to "Settings" --> "My Account" --> "View advanced features"
it'll open up your browser and list a SHITTON of A.I. features, many of which will be on (scroll!)

A reprocessed version of Voyager 1βs iconic Pale Blue Dot photo. The background is lighter than the original, almost glowing from below. The βsunbeamβ in which the Earth hangs, caused by an optical artifact in the original, is still present.
A few years ago, JPL engineer @kevinmgill.bsky.social, with input from Candy Hansen and William Kosmann, used modern techniques to process the original image data and produce an updated version of the iconic photo. (3/n)

The "pale blue dot" photo. It shows three or four colored beams of light β optical artifacts β passing from the left side of the image to the right. The background is dark, empty space. In the topmost light beam is a single pale blue pixel. That's Earth. Sagan's quote is printed on the image. It reads ""We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history..."
"That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives." βCarl Sagan

Fancy calligraphy mss and then someone scrawled fuckin abbot in the margin and MAN do you feel that guy
And my personal favorite from a mss from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1528, added to a mss copy of Ciceroβs De officiis by a monk of Osney Abbey about John Burton, the local abbot (&, according to other historical sources, an actual massive POS).
So much solidarity, dear little monk.

Legacies of the bubble.
This is the AI bubbleβs end game:
βwhen AI has infiltrated work processes to the point that exit costs are prohibitive, the customer base will be unable to escape and coerced into paying up. The world will be hooked on AI, and the tech firms will collect handsome profits.β
