It's a rough start, but it does get easier for her.

Part of it might be that some depictions of telepathy are more intrusive than others. I wouldn't want telepathy that violates others' or my privacy.

I fantasized having telepathy a lot when I was a kid, so I'd be very tempted.

As soon as she was safely away, Sophia watched some leaves falling to distract herself from the hurt she felt from that conversation. She realized for the first time that they were remarkably beautiful this year. The colors were so deep. The way they swayed from side to side on gusts of air as they descended was almost magical. She almost hit a telephone pole.

It's the start of a new season, but more importantly, Sophia's first day in the alternate reality and so the start of a foundational chapter in her life.

Bonus: my favorite two chapter titles are "A Mid-Morning Snack's Dream" and "Aftermath After Math."

I'm not convinced there are any members of the second group that aren't in the first.

It's too bad English doesn't have a way to ask what words mean.

Stories where someone changes their mind from a long and strongly held position, especially if they're written in third person. It's such an internal thing that it's hard to make it seem believable.

Yes, please join TimeTravelAuthors. The more people involved the more fun, and it would be especially nice to have another MG author!

β€œMom, Dad, how much longer am I going to (How did you put it?) ... sense these wavelengths?”

Sophia’s mother turned her head towards her father. β€œYou used the wavelength metaphor?”

β€œDo you have any better ideas?” was his response.

β€œNo, it seems like it’s working.” She turned back to Sophia. β€œIt’s going to be a real long time. I can’t say it’s permanent because this happened and so it’s possible it could happen again, but I don’t know that it ever will.”

Sophia cried. Her mother pulled her into a close embrace, and her father put his hand on her shoulder. β€œCan I at least send a message to my friends somehow?”

Her father shook his head. β€œThat would be like trying to change orange into green.”

Sophia looked at her mother. Her mother nodded in agreement.

Sophia felt like she could cry forever.

Sophia's father explained to her that being in a different reality was like being turned to a different frequency.

It sounds like a really great goal.

"Everything" is the ultimate special interest. It's just not achievable by mortals.

That sounds like it worked out.

If he hadn't had that thought beforehand, he'd look calm on the surface but be a real mess on the inside. He'd feel very lost and disoriented. After that he'd probably feel lied to.

JoaquΓn has thought a lot about why he can time travel but as far as he knows no one else has ever been able to do it, but never found an answer that satisfies him. He'd be happy with the answer that he's the main character in a work of fiction. That would make sense to him.

09.03.2026 04:44 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

I hope you get the answers you need.

3rd person restricted was exactly the right perspective for my last book. It would have changed things if we didn't have an anonymous narrator validating the MC's perspective.

Well, back then they really thought we were that rare.

I was diagnosed in the 80's and told I'd probably never meet another person like me. I still doubt any of my friends were neurotypical from fifth grade on.

09.03.2026 01:12 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm quietly glad and proud that my kid, even at 8, was able to pick his neurokin.

Not only that, I am in strong favour of letting kids know who they are. It's not fair to tell everyone else but the person involved, even if that kid is 8.

Way better to learn yourself young than when a teenager.

Long story short, we told our 8-year-old immediately. I also said, "It's not that rare. There will be five or six other Autistic kids in your class."

So he went to school and named them.

Their teacher was aghast. He was right. Got every single one.

But one of the kids hadn't herself been told.

I realized she'd be okay with going through all of that if she knew why when I was writing the last chapters. It surprised me for a bit and then I realized it was so in character there's no way it could be different.

It would be a "Oh no! I can explain!" moment if Sophia came crashing through the fourth wall. On the other hand, once I explain everything to her I truly believe she'd be happy to go back.

JoaquΓn would just think "Ok, everything makes more sense now."

I haven't written traditional fiction using present tense since I was a kid. I remember liking the way it felt to read it but it was too easy for me to slip into past imperfect from present tense, and that read naturally to me but was jarring for other readers.

Alone in her room after midnight snack, Sophia looked at the finished [SPOILER REDACTED] on her desk with the complicated love that only a creator can feel for her creation. For the first time in a long time she felt something like hope. She had found her own kind of escape.
