Agreed. It's mostly the trajectory that I think is important. There is no end in sight for improvements, whereas ICE cars are stuck in the ditch.
(e-bikes and transit are better than EVs, etc. etc.)

Early EVs were like early iPhones.
This one:
- 1000 km range
- 5-10 minute fill up
- 80% range at -20 degrees
Just incredible innovation that has left fossil fuel tech in the dust.

Farkas says it's an unfair equalization that Calgary pays more education property taxes than Edmonton
He didn't do the math.
Calgary has $457B of assessment to Edmonton's $220B.
The Leg will get $1.2B in YYC prop taxes this year, then return $2.2B in funding YYC school boards.
Did anyone else notice that when they cancelled the carbon tax the price of exactly nothing went down?

Not only is February brutal in Edmonton... the leasing market feels like this snowstorm too. The absorption rate has completely shifted. Many of us predicted that Spring 2026 leasing would be different, but I don't think anyone expected this many units to hit the market at the same time. Right now, tenants have options - lots of them. They walk into a showing, and if the unit isn't exactly what they want...there is similar one just across a street. What we're seeing right now is something we haven't seen in a while - a real competition between landlords. free months of rent gift cards parking incentives flexible move-in dates upgraded appliances utility credits Everyone is trying to lease asap as the lender is coming at you and if you don't achieve proforma - you get to buy the rate down ouch! For investors this means a few things: You need to be strategic, flexible, and realistic (!!!) with pricing and incentives.
Turns out building more homes makes housing more affordable.
Edmonton real estate investors are realizing that because so many options are on the market for tenants, they need to be sweetening the pot with incentives - and being "realistic" with rent.

wow thatβs pretty dark
It's the third time in my life I've witnessed US aggression in the Middle East. The difference this time? EVs, batteries and renewables are ready for the big time.
May the silver lining around these horrors be a faster transition from the insanity of fossil fuels.
I never for one second believed that Farkas had changed. I'm old enough to remember Nickel's half-hearted transformation story after all.
Two white nationalists I exposed in a recent article showed up to try to intimidate me in person last night.

Think of the lives of people who chose to to centre their identity around $80,000 trucks though. π
NEW: Reporting from Postmedia and newly disclosed briefing materials at todayβs special Council meeting outline the scope of the provincial property tax increase. Cities like Chestermere will see increases as high as 32%, making this the largest property tax increase in Southern Albertaβs history.

Surprise! The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is against my 5% billionaire wealth tax. I wonder why?
If enacted, Bezos would owe $12 billion in taxes, and an average family of 4 would receive a $12,000 direct payment.
Poor Jeff would be left with just $224 billion to survive.
rendering of a proposed pedestrian bridge in downtown Edmonton
This Taproot story about the ATB Place renewal reminded me how great it would be for us build the pedestrian bridge pictured below.
As it stands, 100 Street near Hotel MacDonald is downtown's biggest chasm.

Every policy has tradeoffs.
βI am willing to tolerate poorer people getting priced out of my neighborhood to maintain its 19th century aestheticβ is a perfectly fine thing to believe but you should be willing to say that with your whole chest.
We should evaluate policies based on their real world effects, not their proponentsβ stated goals.
Historic preservation froze the built form of the West Village and turned what had been a diverse middle class neighborhood into an exclusive enclave for the super-wealthy.

$40 billion in debt because our government refuses to touch royalties while oil & gas production (and profits) are at record highs. Austerity isn't a necessity, it's a choice based on who this government puts first - ordinary people or corporate interests. #ABLeg #ABPoli #CDNPoli

It drives me crazy that most people think that COVID-19 vaccines don't reduce transmission. They don't bring Reff <1, but the difference between spreading an infection to 2 people vs 1 person is huge at the scale of the population.
I know eh? And everything that is out there seems to be made for plopping onto a piece of land in the country.
