Epicenter map of NLL-SSST-coherence relocated seismicity for the period 2020 to 8 Dec 2025 in the area surrounding the M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquake sequence. Purple lines show Quaternary faults from https://www.usgs.gov/programs/earthquake-hazards/faults
Preliminary NLL-SC relocation of M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquakes and seismicity since 2020. Hubbard events fall in void in earlier seismicity, show clear SE-NW trend, and suggest main rupture was ~vertical (strike-slip?) at SE and complex or dipping (toward NE??) to the NW.
Double couple focal mechanism used is from USGS.
Auto slipmap with regional records (SLIPNEAR method, Géoazur/OCA) M 7.6 Japan Earthquake, 2025-12-08 14:15:10 (UTC)
Plane shallow dipping to the East (strike 179) shown.
Rupt very concentrated around the hypocenter, far from and much deeper than the trench.

Rupture propagation to the north-west seems to be confirmed by the early aftershock distribution :
A USGS map of aftershocks (first 5 hours) show more than 60 located, some as large as M5.1. Coloured dots indicate the age of the events. These extend in a NW-SE direction along a 50-km-long fault.
Today's shallow M7 #earthquake near the Yukon-Alaska border has produced more than 60 #aftershocks (some as large as M5.1) during the first 5 hours.
Live #shaking from a seismic station at Haines Junction (YT) shows a steady stream of aftershocks:

New! We study the disruptive 2025 earthquake unrest near #Santorini using machine-learning derived seismicity as virtual stress meters at depth. We show the unrest was due to a magma dike intrusion, imaging in detail a complex, rebounding process of dike propagation.

Do Coupled Megathrusts Rupture?
In our new preprint, Bar Oryan and I present
the first global analysis of the relationship between kinematic geodetic coupling and earthquake slip models across 12 subduction zones and 61 megathrust earthquakes.

Our latest study in Nature, together with colleagues from @geomarkiel.bsky.social and universities from Greece, shows what happened beneath Santorini earlier this year when tens of thousands earthquakes shook the islands and the seafloor. It was magma. We also have 1/2

The vast majority of the aftershocks is located to the East or South-East of the epicenter, not to the North-West of it:
Map showing earthquakes and past ruptures along the Alaska Peninsula. Five large earthquakes (7.2-8.2) have occurred since July 2020. Green focal mechanism shows a healthy amount of strike slip and marks today's event. Red contours show past rupture areas for large earthquakes. Black contours show 1-m slip intervals for the 2020 M7.8 Simeonof earthquake (Xiao et al., 2021). Purple contours show 1-m slip intervals for the 2021 M8.2 Chignik earthquake (Elliott et al., 2022). Light blue and cyan contours show possible 1-m slip intervals for 1938 M8.3 earthquake (Freymueller et al., 2021). Blue dots are continuous GNSS sites. Gray shading shows geodetic coupling estimates. 1.0 means plates are fully locked together; 0 means plates are freely slipping past each other.
Quick map of M7.3 earthquake offshore the Alaska Peninsula. Today's earthquake (green) has a very similar focal mechanism to the M7.8 2020 Sand Point event, which was dominantly strike-slip but caused a tsunami. Based on depths of mainshock and early aftershocks, could be an upper plate event. ⚒️
