Iโ€™ve dreamt about a swift brick win & front pages of newspapers but this is a nightmare. Itโ€™s not a win. This is a meaningless policy with no legal requirement, no enforcement & no transparency inviting housebuilders whoโ€™ve bragged about blocking swift bricks to do it themselves

It's good news in theory, but very odd that there was previously a three-line whip against swift boxes. Can anyone explain more about this?

Nature not a blocker to housing growth, inquiry finds Commons committee report challenges โ€˜lazy narrativeโ€™ used by ministers that scapegoats wildlife and the environment

This is what many of us have been saying. Part 3 of the Planning & Infrastructure Bill is based on a myth: that we don't have enough homes because wildlife and green spaces are protected. It will solve nothing, and inflict terrible harm on our remaining ecosystems

In 2023, the Labour party supported mandating swift bricks, whipping FOR the swifts brick amendment. 2 years later, the same Ministers in charge of Housing put a 3 line whip (the most extreme block) AGAINST swift bricks. Listen to the strength of support in this powerful speech.

And we have a morally bankrupt government which is happy to help them all the way.

13.11.2025 14:37 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

That would have much such a difference and cost so little. I'm guessing the housing industry os so hell-bent on profit that they will happily push to extinction what little nature is left in this country.

I would've written the exact same post, Stew, but you beat me to it. There's something very odd going on here. The previous government was initially in favour, then categorically against. The same with this government. And a three- line whip is so out of proportion to such a little measure...

Neither do I. Both this government and the past one have been in favour of swift bricks and then mysteriously decided to block them. I can only assume the housebuilding industry simply can't be bothered and has thrown a lot of cash in the government's direction to make it go away.

I'm still seething about the swift bricks and now this. They're morally bankrupt.

06.11.2025 01:13 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is the straw that broke the camel's back with this government for me. It's such a little measure and so easy to implement, but instead they've decided to go down in history as the govt that caused the extinction of the swift in the UK. They can go to hell and I'll never vote for them again.
