It's insanely bizzare to be someone who studies late medieval through the early modern era and see similarities between the insanity of absolute monarchs and modern politicians right now. It's not a matter of sliding back its a matter of how are we ok with returning to this level of delusion?

Stuff like this underlines how dishonest it is for publishers to lure authors into signing AI addendums to their contracts on the promise that doing so gives the publisher greater control over how AI companies use the work. The Government may say itβs fine for AI companies to take it anyway

The American Library Association strongly denounces new federal book banning legislation proposed in Congress. Call your Reps. Tell them to oppose H.R. 7661. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121
American Library Association, Show Up For Our Libraries
"Parents, not politicians, should guide their childrenβs reading. In our school, campus, and public libraries, materials are selected by trained literacy professionals who understand child development and community needs. Their work is grounded in one clear purpose: helping young people become lifelong readers.
H.R. 7661 isnβt fundamentally about protecting kids. Itβs about giving politicians broad authority to restrict whose stories are allowed on the shelves. That should concern anyone who believes in the freedom to read and the right of families to make decisions for themselves.β - ALA President Sam Helmick
"Rather than targeting librarians and teachers, Congress should invest in them. The Right to Read Act offers a better path, supporting well-staffed and well-resourced school libraries, strengthening evidence-based literacy instruction, and protecting the dedicated professionals who help young people discover books that open doors and expand horizons.
When we trust families, support educators, and protect the freedom to read, our young people thrive.β - ALA President Sam Helmick.
NEW: ALA strongly denounces new federal book banning legislation introduced in Congress, HR 7661.
As ALA President Sam Helmick said, "Parents, not politicians, should guide their children's reading." Call your Rep and tell them to oppose this new bill.

A comfort series for me, comes with a couple caveats. Tons of numbers and for some of the Queens there isn't enough for fuller chapters so it centers their Kings to compensate. More traditional historical writing, less narriative driven. Know that before reading and you're good!

Local non-profit outreach organization shared this recently. I believe they got it from somewhere else so if you know the origin please note it!
I have it taped next to me everyday now. It's a good reminder!
Shout out to my non-profit baddies. We've got this!

Published over half a century after Hurston's death the writing is grand and romantic in ways modern authors don't achieve. It does feel dated, understandably. The grand style and not the story is what kept me reading. Happy to be introduced to Hurston will read more from her.

I know the cynics think nothing will happen about the Epstein files but a member of the British royal family has just been arrested on his birthday. Pretty unheard of, at least in this century.

This isn't medieval England. To abandon and arrest a royal family member in 2026 is a big deal. They protect themselves to a fault. They said fuck this man this is too evil.
Ok U.S you're turn.

Religious psychosis stretched to its limits. Beautifully written, everything felt intentional. Gross in the best way. I was left with questions, something I wish more authors would do again. My favorite book of 2025. Medieval Horror at its finest.

The fact that the response to Hasan saying βIβll vote third party over Gavin Newsomβ is to try to harass/shame him into voting for Gavin (implicitly treating Gavinβs candidacy/views as inevitable) instead of saying βmaybe we should change to convince himβ is everything wrong with electoral politics.

Never caught was required reading in a grad class I had on interpretation. It left an impact and shaped what I consider to be thoughtful historical investigating. If it makes you uncomfortable or have a jump out of your seat feeling it is probably something to follow. Bookmarking the rest to read.

Listening to this was like slipping into a warm cup of tea. Incredibly earnest this is a book for someone who is willing to open up and feel things. Erivo knows herself and encourages her reader to get to know themselves better. A short and heartwarming read.

Yet another crucial point: the vast majority of the worldβs historical archives have not been digitized and are thus totally invisible to LLMs/AI.

Headline in today's Guardian that reads "Reading and writing can lower dementia risk by almost 40 percent, study finds. Cognitive health in later life is 'strongly influenced' by lifelong exposure to intellectually stimulating environments, say researchers."
This is why you need to be reading books and writing your own emails, by the way. When you outsource your thinking abilities, you risk turning your brain into soup. Heavy dependence on AI has already been linked with severe cognitive decline. What you donβt use, you will lose.

Russell gives us a fully realized Catherine Howard. Beyond a silly and careless teenager we are introduced to this Queen through her own household and familial history. It rounds her story out and grants her personhood often withheld in other biographies of her.

I had higher hopes for this. It's an older book, it is highly recommend. I think I went in with expectations closer to Caitlin Starling and this is more Philippa Gregory. I love both styles I just had different hopes for this. Still a decent book.

How much of our history belongs to us? This book uses time travel with a dash of Arthurian vibes to explore questions about narrative, power, and what people will do to have control over their stories.
A must read for history and fantasy lovers.
