This story by @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social and @compatibilism.bsky.social is SO good, which makes me SO glad we had Naveena on this week's @climateone.org episode to talk about (surprise!) electricity prices.

Most Americans get their power from a utility that needs to turn a profit for investors — and people are fed up with rising electricity rates. But switching to public power is an uphill battle. What are other strategies for making electricity more affordable?

🌎🔥📊 On the climate front, one year into Trump's second term, the data tell a story of rapid retrenchment.
@grist.org assembled 7 charts tracking the consequences of climate rollbacks: from energy markets to disaster resilience to environmental enforcement.

It’s been a year since catastrophic fires tore through LA. Rebuilding in the aftermath of disasters is becoming a big business, with survivors caught in the middle.
In this week's episode, in collaboration with @grist.org, we explore the chaotic, lucrative "Disaster Economy."
Listen here:
Yesterday: Feeding Texas estimates that its 20 member banks have lost a total of $57.6 million in federal funding cuts, and that’s only in immediate canceled funding. But this could actually be on the low end of the potential impact range.
Excellent reporting from @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social on post-disaster contractor scams grist.org/extreme-weat... "More than a third of people impacted by a disaster report experiencing fraud...contractor fraud has become a lucrative business."
For @theopennotebook.bsky.social, I wrote about what to do when people don't call you back. To investigate secretive subjects, reporters can make creative use of public documents: lawsuits, corporate filings, government databases, social media, and much more. www.theopennotebook.com/2025/08/12/h...
Trump’s EPA announcements on power plant pollution rollbacks inadvertently made the case for voting against the big budget bill, @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social writes. grist.org/regulation/t...
The EPA just withdrew a complaint against a major Trump donor -- GEO Group, which runs ICE detention facilities. The company was spraying a disinfectant without proper protection onto beds and into *microwaves*; detainees reported skin rashes + difficulty breathing www.propublica.org/article/epa-...

ICYMI last week, some amazing (and frightening) reporting on warehouses leaking ethylene oxide. I got to work with @gristnews.bsky.social's video producer, Jesse Nichols, to build this scroll-linked animation showing how ethylene oxide off-gassing works, exposing folks to the toxic carcinogen.
If you're interested in the code, check it out here: github.com/Grist-Data-D...
A huge credit to Jesse for video production on this animation, as well as to the story's amazing reporters @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social and Lylla Younes!
What's the future of science journalism in this anti-science era? @scifri.bsky.social is doing a LIVE SHOW about it next Tues., 4/29, in San Francisco. Join me, @ezraromero.bsky.social, and @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social for an amazing conversation. www.commonwealthclub.org/events/2025-...

> “603,000 El Paso residents, about 90 percent of the city’s population, are exposed to a cancer risk above 1 in 1 million just from Cardinal Health’s two warehouses.” Great work from @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social and Lylla Younes

Living in El Paso, I knew about device sterilization facilities. I didn't know their warehouses could be a greater risk.
From El Paso to Richmond, warehouses are leaking cancer-causing ethylene oxide.
@naveenasadasivam.bsky.social + Lylla Younes report:
elpasomatters.org/2025/04/16/e...
After medical devices are sterilized with ethylene oxide, a toxic chemical, they're stored in warehouses. There they continue to off gas the chemical, putting workers and residents nearby at risk.
Two such warehouses are in El Paso. My latest with Lylla Younes:

The Environmental Protection Agency has signaled that it will reverse the agency's 2009 declaration that greenhouse gases endanger human health. Grist.org reporter @naveenasadasivam.bsky.social spoke with us today about the implications of this move.

Lee Zeldin is taking aim at the endangerment finding — a bedrock of US climate policy. The stakes here are high but Trump's EPA is going to have a difficult road.
