am i doing it right
idk i think i gotta watch more movies from the hollywood blacklist era and before to compare the presentation of the concept, especially because i'm grouping together general crowd scenes with specifically protest scenes, but i think there's something here.
and now when the political climate looms so large there's a focusing in back to individuals, but still the larger protest crowds are almost elementalised, because it evokes the image of waring factions rather than a citizenship being oppressed.
then if you look at the difference between the dark knight and the dark knight rises and the shift is already starting to happen, and i really do think it's in response to protest movements being more profitable when framed as a scary force of nature instead of your actual community of individuals.
just keeping to hollywood: you look at how crowds are handled in genre films of the 90s and 2000s, you see how dir.s like raimi individualise the population, they cast semi diversely and work with broad strokes but just enough personal details to be relatable.
actually one of the strangest things about how crowd action is depicted in film is ever since, as far as i can tell, the occupy movement back in the early 2010s-there's been some attempts to show protests & social upheaval but it always ends up using the imagery of anonymous mobs.
