This happened to a friend. Although their Fulbright application had done well at internal review in the US in December, they were surprised to hear in May that it was turned down. In this case, the host country, which knew the application shouldβve been awarded, will fund the project anyways.

NEW: The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep funding frozen at the NIH - a move that some legal scholars say is illegal.
Federal Register notices are blocked, so no grant-review sessions can be scheduled.
All the gritty details here, and a short π§΅:
www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Jasmeet Hayes, Ph.D. Scarlet & Gray Associate Professor... I was just informed that my NIH research study section meeting that was to be held TOMORROW IS CANCELLED. This panel reviews grants on brain injury, neurovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and epilepsyβissues that affect all Americans, regardless of their background. The exact language of a very tersely worded email was that it "will be rescheduled to a later date, yet to be determined." Exactly when will there be another time 30+ scientists will be able to [set] aside two whole days to discuss close to 100 grants? This panel is planned a year in advance. The grants I spent so many hours reviewing, and the work that the principal investigators have dedicated their professional lives to, will not be reviewed. This is going to delay life-saving, innovative treatments. This is more widespread than just my panel; other NIH panels have similarly been cancelled. I am worried about the future of our country as the world's science superpower.

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. Weβve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home π§ͺπ¬π§¬ π

Thank you! There is a simple thing to do:
You can call up your local newspaper and TV station and offer to talk about what is happening.
Itβs been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this:
Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. π§ͺ
It is natural to want to sink into nihilism. To say βwell thereβs nothing we can doβ and put full trust in the courts, or just shrink into a small bubble and ignore the news and the outside world.
Sometimes, thatβs necessary. If you need to do it now, do it. But optimism is a choice you can make.
This is one way NIH funding is still largely paused:
www.thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...
But there is also a lack of understanding in the general public of what Broader Impacts are/there is a story being told that grants were subverting funds to EDI related work
Agree that none of these awards should be targeted!
