I didnβt get into it necessarily but thereβs a massive audience for recipes and a small one for food writing. My piece on being exhausted (still) by food media. www.aliciakennedy.news/p/on-food-me...
Medicine by The Sundays, θ§jian by Wang OK, Fistful of Love by Antony & The Johnsons, Glacier by James Vincent McMorrow, We love you by dip in the pool β€οΈ and tbh all of Sufjan Stevens' latest/Carrie & Lowell, which makes feeling things feel ok. sending all my love king β€οΈ
my kind of Good Eats!!!
My friend @yongtaufoogazi.bsky.social inspired me to revisit this. I'd forgotten how nice it is.
An overhead shot of a half-loaf of crusty, shiny brown bread, beneath a slice from the same loaf, face up, with a buff color and a wild crumb. ('alt is German for 'old')
Altus Brown (20% old-bread sourdough).
Reduce, recycle, reuse.
a slice of golden flax-flecked brioche
also experiments in vegan olive oil 'true' brioche β this at 47%, done nanterre style. much to consider in improving it β i'd love to try it with citrus and/or vanilla, but also different wholegrains just to see. i think there's lots of liberty to take advantage of in moving away from convention!
a dark, square slice of bread with a webby crumb and a seeded, nutty, grain-pocked complexion
a round wooden board with a loaf of sesame-roofed bread, with several dark, square slices with a webby crumb and a seeded, nutty, grain-pocked complexion, and a serrated knife
been experimenting with buttered toast porridge, after altus, for a newsletter β soaking (excess) toast in coffee, cooking it down to use like a porridge. this multicereal rye and spelt tin had BTP in the preferment and in the barley + oat, sesame, pecan and flaxseed soaker. so unexpectedly good
Iβm the news editor for Chrysalis, and Iβd love to get pitches on news stories from trans youth!
slices of kaya custard cake β two layers of light green cake held together with a light green custard, in slices, on a round wooden cake board
one of the favourites amongst the plant-based recipes i've developed for classic Singaporean confectionery icons, the kaya custard cake. creamy layers of coconut pandan custard made with agar and mung bean starch, soft pandan sponge. first time making it back home
a slice of dark, chocolate-coloured bread with a roofed top, webby and dotted with seeds
some from recent: a seeded dark rye 'buttermilk' sandwich loaf, with molasses, coffee, and carob
I wrote about the link between this bread and cyanotypes awhile back
four kinds of red bean buns on a tray: one flower-shaped, two striped crescents, two buns with one split open to show red bean paste, and one braid made of alternating cinnamon-roll-like rounds of dough and bean
latest newsletter: on old-school red bean buns (roti kacang merah) across Singaporean traditional bakeries. distinct from their Japanese siblings, seasoned by smoky, nutty sesame seeds. clockwise: the pie-sized flower / caterpillar / bun / braid or plait, all vegan

two squares of pale gold cake with a brown ribbon in the middle, covered with a glittery sugar topping, on a wooden board over a white and blue linen
vegan peanut pancake swirl cake, after the yeasted foldover pancakes from our region (apam balik/min jiang kueh). stippled with a crunchy peanut & sugar smile, a warm coconut butter milk soak, more roasted nut crunch plied on top. made these for some interviewees for a piece i've been writing
ββI will not leave even if they bring a bulldozer and bury us.β she added. βLet it be our tomb.ββ
Todayβs essay by Manal Shqair is about nomadic-pastoralist communities in Masafer Yatta in Palestine, and Israelβs destruction of their food sovereignty.

I wrote about the moment in TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME when The Log Lady gives Laura Palmer a message for @lwlies.com ongoing series of tributes to David Lynch. I seem to miss him more and more every day.
