Oh I think she def did but he’s pulled away & maybe that’s because of his parent’s unresolved issues. But it’s now a time in their life where ignoring that event can’t happen anymore because it’s about them, their marriage, their unspoken issues. It’s a reckoning.
My interpretation was that her Catholicism (I'm lapsed) held her hostage when she prayed to live after the shooting & she did. It haunted her & her "pay back" was to live in that nun compound. When she discovered it was no more, she lost her "reason" for surviving & grieved it & all she avoided
