Australia’s biggest gas producers are cashing in on the conflict in the Middle East and the suspension of Qatari LNG production, which has disrupted global supply, with deals struck at more than double recent market rates.
Santos, the country’s second-biggest listed oil and gas producer, finalised a deal with a commodities trader on Wednesday for the sale of an LNG cargo at about $US25 ($35) per million British thermal units (MMBtu), according to market sources, who were not authorised to speak publicly.

NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey says he is so confident the state is the destination of choice for the multibillion-dollar data centre boom that it can set higher standards on power and water use, and he finds it amusing that Victoria considers itself in competition with its northern neighbour.
“NSW is always going to remain, itself, as a premium destination for data centres,” Mookhey told a state parliament estimates hearing on Wednesday.
The data centre building boom is one of the key trends to watch in 2026. Bethany Rae
“Victoria, I’m sure, sees itself in competition with us – they always do.
“And it’s not just in data centres – it’s in coffee, it’s in hotels, it’s in weather, sporting events.
“We don’t consider ourselves in competition with Victoria, and I’m always amused they see themselves in competition with us.”
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has declared her government will be
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has declared her government will be “ruthless” in competition to attract data centres to her state, which has about 50 data centres to NSW’s 90.
Companies including AirTrunk, Microsoft, NextDC, CDC and Amazon Web Services have beaten a path to the doors of senior ministers in both states to urge an accelerated rollout.
Victoria approved a $1 billion NextDC facility in Port Melbourne in just 75 days.
Asked by NSW shadow treasurer Scott Farlow at estimates whether NSW would aim to match that, Mookhey said the Minns government was yet to decide whether it would set a time target for approvals.
“We don’t see ourselves in competition with Victoria,” Mookhey added.
He said demand to build data centres in NSW was so high that the state could afford to set higher standards – yet to be released – on power and

The Gulf States are receiving Iranian counterattacks because they are facilitating the US/Israeli assault on Iran. There are American airfields and radars there.
Involvement in shielding those airfields would constitute active collaboration in the US war on Iran.
There is nothing neutral about it.

Lebanon’s Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed has announced that approximately 454,000 Lebanese people have registered as displaced.
She urged those who have not yet registered to do so, and said the Sports City Stadium in Beirut would be opened as a shelter for families in the municipality. In Akkar there are also multiple shelters.
Sayed added that “hot meals and food rations are being distributed in various Lebanese regions in cooperation with organisations and associations, with numbers increasing gradually to ensure no person is left without food.”
Israeli attacks on Lebanon have displaced more than 454,000 people in just a few days.
454,000 people. Because they felt like bombing Beirut.

This neatly encapsulates The Dipshit Paradox:
Any ignorance creating sufficiently damaging effects will become indistinguishable from malice. Any sufficiently damaging malice will be abetted by ignorance. We must never exonerate malice simply because it can easily be explained by stupidity.

U.S. May Have Committed War Crime In Sinking Of Iranian Ship
The Geneva Conventions say nations have a duty to “take all possible measures” to help rescue victims of shipwrecks. A U.S. submarine left that to Sri Lanka.
“The 312-foot Dena and its 130-member crew, many of them musicians in the Iranian navy band, had just finished participating in an Indian government naval exercise and cultural exchange that the U.S. Navy had also participated in and were on the way home on Wednesday.”
