I try not to be a killjoy, but when there are so many road closures, foreshore blocked off every second weekend, no trams...and that's before the noise - it's hard to keep my annoyance in check. Most of my neighbours who can go away leave for these weekends.

I love paying rates so that half of summer there are corporate events that lock me out of the public green spaces in my own suburb. Having to listen to incessant helicopter noise is driving me insane and that's all before the fighter plane fetishism.

There was a lot of contemporary prose post war that shared the experience of fighters and humanised the horror. War remembrance used to be sombre and culturally the war to end all wars was a concept most took solace in. We could all do well to remember that even our enemies are human.

I think minimising the calls for violence might be understandable, but it's not excusable.

We have become more lionising of killers the further away we get from having killed Nazis. It used to be much more the norm to fully appreciate the detrimental impact on those who did the killing.
