It’s being said a lot that the shadow of Iraq is hanging over Keir Starmer and the Labour Party during this Iran crisis.
It absolutely should. What’s remarkable is how little much of the British media and the rest of politics seem to be thinking about it at all, or learning its lessons.

What would really help is a door to door advice programme about switching to heat pumps. Large % period homes, owners need careful advice about switching.

This seems very misleading by the Home Sec - poor form and doesn't help with the whole "rebuilding trust in politics" that this government purports to care about

This is quite a chart.
- 1995-2005 - *massive* house price growth.
- Last 20 years - house prices broadly flat, in real terms. www.thetimes.com/article/9302...

I agree with @camcycle.bsky.social of course but, as in other places in Cambridge, it is pedestrian and wheelchair user experience which is currently at least as shockingly bad as cycling.

In any event, listing wouldn't prevent an Muslim group using a former church for worship, it just makes alterations more complicated. If they really wanted to stop conversions, they would need to sub-divide the religious buildings use class into Christian and non-Christian.

The current argument of the British right is that Muslims turned out in "blocs" with "family voting" to cast their ballots for a party led by a gay Jewish man, and this shows that multiculturalism has failed, voting is "sectarian" and we are in a crisis.
Hmmmmmm.

Also, for all that the Green policy offer is flakey in places, and absolutely deserves scrutiny and challenge, there is a massive qualitative difference: Greens support traditional liberal democratic fundamentals, Reform (not least threatening UK-ICE) do not.

Excellent point! Of course family members of all cultural backgrounds are pretty likely to go to vote together, @rcwheat.bsky.social and I normally do. That isn't "family voting", we identify ourselves and vote separately once we arrive.

On one occasion I encountered a party volunteer outside polling station falsely claiming voters had to give him their number. I mentioned it to the presiding officer who went and spoke to him immediately. I also phoned the election office who said they would immediately speak to the party agent.

Gorton and Denton: 'Family voting' concerns raised by election observers
The officer responsible for running the by-election said no reports of family voting were made by polling station staff.
So now we have BBC running a whole report amplifying uncorroborated "family voting" claims which have been decisively rebutted by the Returning Officer. Why did these observers not call the election office immediately if they were so concerned? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This is good, but it also shows just how expensive car infra is.
£500 is:
- a workhorse bike that'll last years with maybe £50 in annual maintenance.
- half the cost of a no-frills eBike that charges off the mains, or 75% via salary sacrifice.
- six months of unlimited TfL bus & tram travel.

The answer, of course, is Zack Polanski, whose emergence on the political stage is the equivalent of discovering a rather nasty wasps' nest in your roof, or realising that a rat has died under your floorboards.

It now takes nearly 5% of income from the poorest families but barely 1% from the richest. For many, it's become a grinding monthly obligation to rival the Poll Tax.
