π£#Tossa honors Enric βKikeβ Ballesteros βthe eminent ecologist who sadly passed away a year ago. Many institutions have already paid tribute, and this Sunday Tossa de Mar βa place deeply connected to himβ will do so as wellπ https://visittossa.com/agenda_mensual/homenatge-a-enric-kike-ballesteros/
Just submitted my first first-authored scientific communication from my PhD: a short communication to Marine Ecology!π
Presenting visual evidence of detritivores feeding on sponge-derived detritus, an exciting step for understanding the sponge loop in temperate ecosystems.
Now we wait for news!π€π

This project will explore innovative environmental variables for species distribution models in the Mediterranean Sea.
Iβm deeply grateful to the @britishecologicalsociety.org for supporting this work and for recognising the importance of integrating citizen science with ecological research.
Iβm deeply grateful to to my PhD supervisor Tanja Stratmann @drtanjastratmann.bsky.social and researcher Jolle Jolles for their support during the development of the ideas and their support for the application.
Iβm thrilled to share that my project βFrom Data to Discovery: A Citizen Science Study Towards Species Distribution Models in the Mediterranean Seaβ has been awarded funding through the @britishecologicalsociety.org #SmallResearchGrant2025!
Starting by March 2026,
Stay tuned for updates! ππ
Yesterday was the weekly meeting with my PhD student @itziarburgues.bsky.social and I was brave enough to announce that I would have lots of time until New Year's Eve to read all chapters of her PhD thesis so she can submit it by the end of this year/ early next year. 1/n
Back to keep writing and polishing the result section of my PhD dissertarion on the topic of Sponge Detritus production in the Mediterranean Sea.
Missing the Sponge Conference @wscommunity.bsky.social , happening this week!!
But hopefully to be able to share more research in the future!
Whatever the outcome, this process has been an incredible learning journey in putting my research vision into words.
What to check how marine sponges contract and move??
Footage captures with a DIY Raspberry Pi cameras!
Studying these hidden rhythms in the sponge Aplysina aerophoba is one of the objectives of the project proposal just submitted!
Greatefull for the support of my PhD supervisor @drtanjastratmann.bsky.social , also Dr. Jolle Jolles and from the Dr. David Amblas from @ub.edu for supporting this proposal!
The project proposal brings together species distribution modelling, citizen science, and DIY timelapse cameras to study the Mediterranean sponge Aplysina aerophoba. Aiming not only to produce new knowledge, but also to connect local communities with the conservation of our coastal ecosystems.
After few weeks of writing and polishing, I have just submitted my research grant application for the British Ecological Society Small Research Grant. #BES
Whatever the outcome, this process has been an incredible learning journey in putting my research vision into words.
