Arlington County Board member JD Spain: "While the outcome was not what everyone hoped for, this vote represents a meaningful compromise—and, more importantly, decisive action. I would have titled the Arlington Now piece: “After Decades of Inaction, Arlington County Board Reaches Compromise on Governance Reform.” Progress does not happen overnight. But make no mistake: this moment is historic. For the first time in more than 95 years, the Arlington County Board has taken definitive action to move governance reform forward. Between now and July 2026, we will take concrete steps to engage the public, build understanding, and advance this work with intention and accountability. I will be sharing more details in tomorrow’s weekly newsletter, and I’m honored to be asked to write an upcoming op-ed for Black Virginia News to further explain why this moment matters. Change starts with action—and this vote is the beginning."

This weekend, the Board joined neighbors to celebrate Green Valley Day, honoring one of Arlington’s oldest communities. Chair Takis Karantonis read a proclamation recognizing 181 years of history, resilience, and unity as residents gathered for food, music, and community.
