Our finding that implicit tournaments may lead to behaviors like low uptake of statutory leave has broader implications for leave policies, flexible work, and gender equality.
By analyzing a paternity leave reform in Norway, we show that a male worker's earnings improve when more male competitors take leave. This suggests that competition for career advancement is influenced by the actions of peers.
In the latest issue of @reveconstudies.bsky.social, we (Hyejin Ku, Kjell Salvanes, and I) argue for the presence of implicit tournaments in the workplace: Workers' career progression can depend on factors unrelated to job performance, such as visibility and presence. academic.oup.com/restud/artic...
