The Media Held Politicians To Account During The Iraq War. What Changed? Outside of elections, the media is the only real mechanism of accountability for our government. So far, it's failed to do its job on the illegal war with Iran.

Quite telling to compare how Kerry O’Brien interviewed John Howard about Iraq to Sarah Ferguson’s bizarre efforts this week. I wrote about it www.lamestream.com.au/the-media-he...

Is it regime change? “Yeah, but we killed all the guys I wanted in the first wave.”

Is it to stop a bomb? “They promised not to build one and give it all up, but we couldn’t let them have a conventional-missile gun to our head.”

No one can define the objective.

Yeah, I think it’s clear the entire US govt has different ideas of why they are in this war and what the objectives are.

It’s total chaos and factionalism, with Trump swinging between motives depending on who he last spoke to.

But Albanese has backed it. War without an objective is just killing.

2/2 @scottmitchell.bsky.social is being generous in calling this a question.

It's been clear for some time that Albanese, Wong & Marles have given up all but the pretense of an independent foreign policy.

In unquestioningly following Trump and Netanyahu, our government endangers us all. #auspol

1/2 "If Australia will support a war without knowing the reason or legal basis for it, it calls into question whether we have any independent foreign policy decision-making...or whether the official policy of the Albanese govt is to simply support any war Donald Trump decides to launch"

Fam, the Greens couldn’t win a single seat in the whole of Melbourne, not the city seat or ‘uber-woke’, young, pro-Gaza Brunswick. They can’t win Richmond in the ‘hippy’ NSW northern rivers, despite trying very hard for 30 years.

They’ve got a long way to go in literally every seat.

If Albanese offered our support, before even knowing why this catastrophic war was launched — what is his foreign policy?

It suggests he would support any use of force Donald Trump tells him to.

No questions asked, no reasons needed.

Albanese Supported An Illegal War With No Clear Objective or End. It's A Grim New Low the Albanese government didn’t even know the reason for the war, let alone whether it was unlawful – but they supported it anyway.

It’s not just an illegal war. That would be bad enough.

Today, the Albanese government clearly admitted they gave our support to a war, without even knowing why it was launched.

Extract from Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong's press conference on 1 March 2026:

Journalist: Israel described this as a pre-emptive strike, so was there an imminent threat? Was there talk of that? Is that why this was [indistinct]?

Foreign Minister: I'll leave it for the United States and Israel to speak of the basis, the legal basis for the attacks. What I would say to Australians is that Iran has been a destabilising force in the region for decades. It has orchestrated attacks on Australia, and I think we all understand that this issue did not start yesterday.

A very illuminating moment in Penny Wong's press conference today. The Australian foreign minister won't claim the attacks were legal #auspol

Hugely significant: first strikes on Iran appear to be political and civil headquarters in Tehran, not nuclear or missile facilities.

From the very first moment, these attacks signal an intent to attack, degrade and potentially even overthrow the Islamic Republic.

It is absolutely shocking that years after threats against First Peoples and Muslim communities were first reported, no one has been held accountable.

How many warnings does this country need?

White supremacy is not fringe. It is organised, persistent and escalating.

This is a person who has been targeting Black and brown communities for years — and who remains at large. Senator Fatima Payman has also been targeted. And now during Ramadan, Muslim communities are being threatened, with references to the Christchurch massacre.

This week, when I saw the letters sent to Lakemba Mosque, I immediately knew that it was the same perpetrator. The same distinct handwriting, language and misspellings, and the same stamps made using a bullet dipped in ink.

Menacing letters sent to politicians bear hallmarks of Sydney mosque threats The ABC can reveal two of the threatening, hate-filled letters sent to Lakemba Mosque this month bear close resemblance to similar racist letters sent to multiple politicians since 2022.

Three years ago a series of racist threatening letters were sent to the Victorian Greens. They were covered in white supremacist hate, swastikas and explicit threats against my life and my family. They were reported to police. But as far as I know nothing came of it 🧵

Exclusive: Robodebt architect remains employed in a senior governance role in the public service Scott Britton was a national manager of the customer compliance branch in the Department of Human Services and signed a June 2014 minute that first detailed how robodebt would work.

From me: The architect of the Robodebt scheme, who was told it was unlawful even as he delivered it for the government, is still employed in the public service, now at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. And in a senior governance and risk role. www.crikey.com.au/2026/02/20/r...

The Inside Story of How ABC Bosses Abandoned Their Commitment to Protect Sources The obligation to protect sources was quietly erased from ABC policy over 15 years ago, leaving journalists to fend for themselves as the Royal Commission orders them to retain sensitive information.

The Royal Commission’s order for journalists to retain information has been reported — but I wanted to go a bit deeper.

I found the story of why any sentence that guaranteed source protect at the ABC was erased from policy over 15 years ago.

NSW police hardly covering themselves in glory is pretty standard, and sadly expected. But the media's response is beyond the pale.

No surprise that Minns won't apologize for police violence.

As @scottmitchell.bsky.social explains in the latest Lamestream podcast, it is NSW police who run the premier. #nswpol
