Kidnapping of foreigners soars in Africa's lawless Sahel region Growing insecurity in the Sahel made 2025 one of the worst years on record for the abduction of foreigners in Africa.

Hahaha I had weird listening habits and that piece stuck with me—I played a lot of classical sax in college, so I just didn’t get as much exposure to a lot of the great orchestral rep and gravitated to listening to some, uh, less canonical work

I’m admittedly not deep in the classical world but the first thing that springs to mind is Stravinsky’s Renard

The California State University system spent $16.9 million last year giving ChatGPT to all students, faculty, and staff. We are asking the CSU chancellor not to renew the contract with OpenAI when it expires.

Great teachers make all the difference! I was enthusiastic about medicine when I started college because I’d had a great anatomy and microbiology teacher in HS, and then the premed core I began in college left me so uninspired because of subpar teaching that I changed paths.

Honestly, even though I never took another course in the field, the intro to psychology class I took was probably the #1 most valuable of all bc we studied how data is manipulated, which at that time in my life was 🤯 I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn thanks to gen ed requirements.

It really is striking to me how much the breadth of classes stuck with me. I began as a premed, my gen ed classes were too fascinating, and I soon wound up a music major with a short foray in history.

Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:

1. Darwinism (co-taught by a biologist, an anthropologist, and a philosopher)
2. Individual Freedom vs Authority
3. Performance Practices in Music
4. General Biology
5. Ethnicity in America

One of the things about people showing up to protest for the first time, that many, many armchair theorists don't grasp, is the effect of seeing what happens with your own eyes, then seeing how media covers it, and what is said ABOUT YOU by media and political personalities/office holders.

I always wonder what life would’ve been like if I chose to follow the thing I was better at (math, science) instead of the thing I enjoyed more (music, humanities) even though it was more challenging. Had much stronger math than verbal scores! But my premed classes were so boring, I had to get out.

This is a fabulous and important essay.

"In the end, generative AI might be a blip in tech history, over-promising and under-delivering until finally the cash runs out. But it seems it’s arrived just in time to shove universities over a cliff edge they’d already walked themselves up to."
