today im doing dailies and then continuing resi 1 remake www.twitch.tv/im_diggle
the game is actually the precursor to the shadow hearts series, which i hear is also pretty good, but is on the ps2... so it'll be a while before i check that out. next is dino crisis 2! which i actually already finished as of writing this, so expect my thoughts on that soon as well!
even the more gimmicky fights i just brute-forced without figuring out the gimmick until after the fact, lol... despite my frustrations, especially near the end, this game is really something special. a 4-disc spanning character-driven story that doesn't pull punches. very fun!!
the tactical combat, while cool, doesn't feel that impactful and decisions in combat don't often amount to much more than "the person with more hp / melee weapons goes in front and the ranged stay in the back", so your game plan is pretty much the same for every fight
it's very easy to miss items hidden in the areas, which means that you'll sometimes just completely miss a key item and are left clueless on what's next. this actually resulted in me wasting a lot of time at the end of the game since i had seemingly soft-locked myself (we figured it out)
all in all, i love the story and characters, but i do have some critiques on the gameplay. it's often unclear where to go and you end up walking in circles a lot. the encounter rate is pretty high, too, to a slightly annoying degree (not that bad though)
but i enjoyed the dynamics between these characters a lot, they are all flawed in their own ways and are not perfect people. there's a particular scene late in the game that was p much just 10 minutes of character exploration that kind of left me speechless. very special and cool for the time
the characters besides koudelka are edward, a dude who's pretty much just there looking for treasure, and james, a bishop on a mission from the church. james in particular is horribly racist and bigoted and the game really wants you to hate his guts, which i did
speaking of those party members, the game is very focused on plot and characters, and the animation work on these models is just amazing! the mocap had me stunned on its quality throughout the game and the voice acting, while having its weak points, is pretty damn good too
"field" gameplay looks like resident evil, with 3d characters existing inside beautiful pre-rendered 2d backgrounds. the game uses random encounters and the combat gameplay is a turn-based grid-based tactics type of deal, where you move your 3 party members across the field
koudelka is a horror-themed strategy rpg. it's set in 1898 wales and is about koudelka, who we follow throughout the game as she breaks into a monastery, terrorizes the local monster population, and performs all sorts of psychic shenanigans

a little late on this one, i actually finished it last week. and i took a week long break in between sessions so my thoughts on this one are a little more scattered, but to give you the short of it: it's excellent!
