A fascinating summary of the science development that has evolved over the last half century and makes use of hydrometric data to understand flood risk…
Graphic with details of the UKEOF 2026 conference. Text overlaying a graphic depicting a woodland and a stream in shades of blue with the following elements picked out: birds (swifts) and bats making calls, a deer detected on a camera, a salmon detected via its DNA in the water, the flow rate of the stream and the atmospheric concentration of nitrogen dioxide.

An insightful summary… commenting as use of the like ❤️ button feels wrong for this!
A pastel sky after sunset is reflected in a still lake below. A small line of geese are silhouetted against the water, swimming towards the left. There are some interesting cloud patterns on the right.

In the early 1990s, only about 1,300 manatees remained in Florida’s waters.
Today, their population has grown to more than six times that – all thanks to laws like the Endangered Species Act and people taking action to protect them. 💙

THANK YOU to everyone who got involved in our latest #BigRiverWatch! 💙
More than 4,100 of you got outside, spent time by your local rivers, and became citizen scientists.
Together, you submitted over 2,300 surveys and spent an incredible 43 days watching our rivers. 👏
🧵
Fantastic to have joined the Environment Agency Chair Alan Lovell with Sasha Woods and Alison Matthews on Saturday morning to be part of these great citizen science initiatives- look forwards to seeing the results and continuing our journey of integrating citizen science data!

You can help Hedgehogs this summer... by doing absolutely nothing! Leaving a section of your garden wild and undisturbed can provide a hog haven, and support countless other species. 🦔

I’ve had a male and female this week- I think they visit from nearby ponds in the neighbours garden
A spider with translucent legs, red eyes, and an abdomen that looks like a mirror ball. She is standing on a mossy leaf.
Here is some fun news! This fancy lady spider with a shiny mirrorball for a booty is a newly described species as of yesterday! I heard from the scientist who described her and my photos will be running in a local paper in Ecuador!

Great photo Jill… one of my favourite garden visitors!
A mature male Scarce Chaser clings to a branch above a fishing lake. He is a medium-sized dragonfly with a hairy dark brown thorax and a chalky blue abdomen with a black tip. His eyes are pale blue and his face is black. His wings are clear, except for black pterostigmata, and black patches at the wing bases with a hint of yellow staining around them. The background is a diffuse pale blue, and the dragonfly and his perch are centred in the bottom right corner of the image, leaving quite a lot of clean negative space.

Fantastic to see the #CitizenScience results out on UK rivers… wholly recommend taking part- you can express early interest for the September blitz!
The cover of the Great UK WaterBlitz April 2025 report showing a collage of participant photos - people holding up their water testing kits. The title reads "Great UK WaterBlitz Spring 2025 Report" with the "FreshWater Watch" logo appearing on the . White text stating "out now!" appears prominently on the left. Two wavy blue lines appear in the background.
💧 Our April #GreatUKWaterBlitz report is out! 📋
A huge thank you to the 8,000 people who tested their local rivers, streams, ponds and lakes between 25-28 April, collecting over 4,000 data points.
