This is Worsley at the console for FERUT, the first digital computer in Canadian history. Among other things, it was used for atomic energy equations at Chalk River and St. Lawrence Seaway calculations.
EDSAC is considered the second digital computer ever built. Worsley helped prepare its first run and wrote the report on its first operations.
Early in her career, Beatrice Worsley was a lieutenant working for the Naval Research Establishment. She spent more than 150 days at sea conducting experiments on hull corrosion. In this picture, she is working onboard the minesweeper HMCS Quinte.
And she was often the only woman in the room while she did her groundbreaking work. Scott Campbell from the University of Waterloo joins us to talk about this often overlooked computer pioneer on Muddy York, Toronto's #1 history podcast.
