This image captures the picturesque fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast of England. Once one of the largest fishing ports in the region, it is now a popular tourist destination The village is known for its quaint, tightly packed cottages, steep, winding cobbled streets, and a small, sheltered harbour. It was once home to a young Captain Cook, who worked there as a shop assistant. The village has a strong artistic heritage and is home to the renowned Staithes Gallery, showcasing local art. The pub visible by the water is the "Cod and Lobster," a traditional pub that has been rebuilt multiple times after being damaged by the sea.
I once saw Staithes (which was locally often pronounced Steers) wonderfully described as a "jumble of whitewashed, pantile-roofed cottages clinging to the hillside, threaded through with narrow ginnels leading to the pretty harbour." and with the the Cod & Lobster, practically
This is a British political cartoon from 1815 titled The Blessings of Peace or the Curse of the Corn Bill, published by S.W. Fores and etched by George Cruikshank. It satirizes the Corn Laws of 1815, which imposed high tariffs on imported grain to protect British landowners from foreign competition, keeping domestic grain prices high. The cartoon depicts the stark contrast between the wealthy landowners (the "masters") on the shore, who are determined to keep prices high at "80 shillings" per quarter, and the impoverished "poor" who are struggling to afford food. Introduced in 1815, the Corn Laws imposed tariffs on imported grain to protect British landowners by keeping food prices high. While they safeguarded rural interests, they were bitterly resented in industrial areas, where expensive bread weighed heavily on working-class 1/5
Some people are just so cruel. I left 2 cinema tickets to Melania on the dashboard of my car. When I got back, someone had put the window through and left another 4 next to them.
The road connects the railway stations at Garsdale and Dent in It is an unclassified highway, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The name "Coal Road" originates from its use for transporting locally mined coal. Prior to its use for coal transport, it served as a droving route between England and Scotland. The area is known for its picturesque and high-level routes, popular for activities like mountain biking. Image John Illingworth / Galloway Gate / CC BY-SA 2.0
Yorkshire's Green lanes are ancient, unpaved rural routes, often former Roman roads, medieval packhorse routes, or drovers' roads that fell into disuse as modern roads were developed, yet remain as public highways (Byways Open to All Traffic or Unclassified County Roads). Notable
Do you need some me time? A place where you can just be by yourself, with no chance of bumping into anyone else? A huge facility thatβs built for hundreds, but no one except you will be there? A place you can sleep deeply? You do? Then simply buy a cinema ticket to see βMelania.β
This image depicts the execution of the surviving conspirators involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plot was a failed attempt by English Catholics to assassinate King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. The conspirators were sentenced to the traditional punishment for traitors: hanging, drawing, and quartering. The executions of the eight surviving men took place in January 1606 at Westminster. Guy Fawkes managed to avoid the full agony of the punishment with his neck being broken on the gallows.
On this day 30 January and tomorrow the 31st 1606 York born Guido (Guy) Fawkes and the surviving conspirators from the Gunpowder Plot were executed (The executions took place just outside Westminster Hall, in Old Palace Yard (31st) and in St Paul's Churchyard (30th).

With the US president saying Nato/British troops stayed "off the front line" in Afghanistan, Nigel Farage won't want British voters being reminded that he called Donald Trump "the bravest man I have ever met."
The Government is planning to send King Charles to the US to celebrate with Trump. Giving him a royal visit right now sends a terrible message that his behaviour is acceptable. We can stop this if enough of us speak up. Will you add your name to the petition? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ca...
A few dozen people were born in the Reichstag in 1943 - their mothers walked from the CharitΓ© maternity ward, over the river, and into the (relative) safety of the Reichstagβs cellars during a time when Berlin was being bombed often & heavily by the RAF.
This image displays the Conduit Court at Skipton Castle, a medieval castle in North Yorkshire, The castle has been preserved for over 900 years and is considered one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval castles in England. The court is named for the 16th-century water piping that terminated here. The prominent, twisting yew tree in the center is thought to have been planted in 1659 by Lady Anne Clifford to celebrate the castle's restoration after the English Civil War.
Beyond the old Norman entrance of Skipton Castle is the gem that is Conduit Court. This paved and cobbled courtyard, surrounded by a range of domestic Tudor buildings, contains the famous yew tree reputedly planted by Lady Anne Clifford. The courtyard takes its
