Reminder: the entire NSF budget is 9B and NIH like 47B. And they have 500B that they don’t know how to spend.
My paper, "The problem of explaining shifting targets," has been accepted for publication in European Journal for Philosophy of Science. The preprint is currently available on PhilSci-Archive (final version to follow when its online):

Congratulations Edoardo!! 🎉🥳
AI simply cannot stand in front of a classroom, gesticulating wildly and writing semi-illegibly on chalkboards, both of which are key to building rapport and convincing your students you are worth learning from
Screenshot of a webpage displaying endorsement quotes for the book "The Organism–Environment Pairing: A Historical and Philosophical Reappraisal" (MIT Press) by Alejandro Fábregas-Tejeda. "This long-overdue history and philosophy of the 'environment' concept illuminates how biology thinks about one of its most fundamental ideas. A rewarding, eye-opening read for historians, philosophers, and scientists alike." --Tobias Uller, Professor of Evolutionary Biology, Lund University; coauthor of Evolution Evolving and Evolutionary Causation "A formidable achievement, massive in scope, meticulously researched, densely argued, and timely. Fábregas-Tejeda's book is the definitive work on the history of thinking about the complex relation between organism and environment." --Denis Walsh, Professor, University of Toronto; author of Organisms, Agency, and Evolution "Fábregas-Tejeda's discerning analysis brings much-needed conceptual clarity to the enigmatic yet essential subject of biology--the organism-environment relationship. A lively, engaging book that will inform practicing biologists as well as philosophers and historians of science." --Sonia E. Sultan, Alan M. Dachs Professor of Science, Wesleyan University; author of Organism and Environment "A tour de force of integrated history and philosophy of biology. With impressive breadth and conceptual clarity, this outstanding monograph reshapes how we think about organisms, environments, and their entanglements." --Daniel J. Nicholson, Assistant Professor, George Mason University; author of What Is Life? Revisited
I'm touched by the incredibly generous assessments that some of the first readers of "The Organism-Environment Pairing" (@mitpress.bsky.social) have offered! I'm excited to exchange ideas with everyone once the book is published in May! 📗

It’s been a while since I read a non-fiction book so quickly cover to cover. Incredibly accessible and philosophically rich. A must read!
This short book by @djnicholson.bsky.social is extraordinarily good for understanding not just the genesis, message and myths of Schrödinger's book but also why molecular biology developed in the way it did (and what's problematic about that).

I have a question for all those who have done a PhD. If you weren’t in an academic institution, how did you write your research proposal? I’m struggling with how to access the texts I need #history #historyphd #phd #academicchatter
Congratulations to former MCPS postdoc Max Dresow for two recent publications. With Alan Love @thebjps.bsky.social - The Interdisciplinary Entanglement of Characterization and Explanation. And in @universitypress.cambridge.org -

I am generally more pro-AI than the median opinion on this website, but having a publisher post AI generated summaries of research papers without any human verification seems like an exceptionally bad idea. Hallucination is rarer now than it used to be, but it's not gone.
Congratulations!!
Thank you Dan!! :D

Congratulations Alejandro!!
Incredible!! Thank you!
Longshot but, does anyone know where I can find the original version of this photograph of Norbert Wiener, Arturo Rosenblueth, and Julian Bigelow? I assumed this would be from a Macy Conference (with Mead behind Rosenblueth?), though I'm confused by the white coats #histsci #histstm #histtech #hps
This is great! Thank you!
Both work! Ahaha
Thank you! It’ll be publicly available after the final submission after the defence :)
As I say in the acknowledgements, I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed to this in ways big and small. Special thanks to @afabregastejeda.bsky.social who went far above the call of duty by carefully reading and commenting on the entire thing!
Back on social media after a long hiatus! Been a little busy ;)
Just submitted this, defence will be mid November!
