Dr. Gladys West, the pioneering mathematician whose work laid the foundation for modern GPS technology, has died. She was 95.
Totally exhilarating to watch a football team play this well whether or not it’s yours. I can only imagine that they’re gonna be peeling Indiana fans off the ceiling for days
I loved that book so much
This

Democrats finally get to celebrate, yet questions remain about the party's path forward. Here are key takeaways from Tuesday's results. now
Media orgs are confused and upset about last nights Democratic wins.
I don’t recall a “questions remain” after Trump or GOP wins.
After 13 years, Mississippi Democrats have broken the Republican Party’s supermajority in the Mississippi Senate.
Democrats flipped two GOP-held Senate seats and one House seat in the special elections.

We're joined this week by Dr. Chris Gilliard (@hypervisible.bsky.social), Co-Director of the Critical Internet Studies Institute to talk about what generative AI means for surveillance, and how this technology disproportionately harms marginalised groups:

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.
Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.
They are not the same.
Thank you
Mine as a rural kid was an hour long, terrifying and the first real training ground for social politics 😆
Parents are scared of their kids getting bullied on school buses....? I married into a situation like this and it was absolutely wild.
Washington Post article: "For $65K a year, you can send your kid up an AI-driven private school. There are no teachers, and students study just two hours per day."
Ad for Elephant Learning, claiming kids can learn 1 year of math in 3 months
Ad for Miacademy Learning, promising "Learning at lightning speed."
Ad for Thinkster Learning, promising "confidence rebuilt in weeks" and "3X faster progress than old-school centers."
I've been tracking ads for learning aps for a couple of months now, and this claim that AI can help kids learn at super speed is one of the most prevalent and troubling claims. 1/

We built a calculator that doesn't work, but don't worry, it's also a plagiarism machine that will tell you to kill yourself. It runs on the world's oceans and costs 10 trillion dollars.
My students, who attend a working-class rust-belt college, openly talk abt how much they hate AI & are afraid of its consequences. I wonder how much of the oft-reported student enthusiasm for the tech is the merely result of the NYT’s Ivy League bias
A big difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans understand the science of political communication. Republicans dictate the topics/terms of debate while Dems (and the left) usually burn energy in constant response.
Thiel and Co call this mimetics, Lakoff calls it framing.
What I’ve come to understand about generative AI is that it is ultimately a tool for the redistribution of mediocrity.
