Think we're doing well to move towards the route itself as being the main volume unit, rather than the catch/target. Which isn't to say yards per catch or target aren't useful, but I'd argue their use is to measure specific parts of receiver play rather than as a proxy for overall receiver quality.

There are also some serious problems with it when just viewing it isolation, without regard for target volume, since it treats the receiver who earned an incomplete target or caught a failed completion as doing considerably worse than his 4 teammates who ran routes & didn't get a target on the play.

Pretty much every person I've seen arguing against going for 2 when you were down 15 assumes you will make the 2 point conversion if you go for it later and you won't make it if you go for it early.
