Oklahomaβs own Markwayne Mullin will lead the Department of Homeland Security. Truly the only expertise necessary in this administration is being a lying sycophant for Trump.

Totally saw Wu-Tang immediately. I used to draw that symbol on all my sports gear in high school so teammates would know it was mine.

Statement from Jasmine Crockett.
MAHA, indeed. Eyeballing this map I'd wager there's a fairly strong negative correlation between overall fitness (a multi-item index) & voting Trump in 2024.
Also FWIW: Oklahoma has the distinction of residents with the poorest diet of any state. Boomer Sooner.

Pretty much an iron law that the more unjustified a military campaign is on rational grounds, the more the aggressors will cite God's sanction. Leaders don't need to tell soldiers they're in a holy war when the nation is under attack; they do it when motivation to fight might otherwise be lacking.
Sadly I've learned many departments apply this approach to grad student mentoring as well. The standard seems to be "don't get complaints." But if you're a really dedicated mentor the attitude is "That's nice that you're altruistic like that. But it's bonus & neither required nor rewarded."

My goodness.

It's gonna be held in Banff?! Makes me want to pivot toward studying rural politics just for the conference!
That's just silly. I hold contempt for *some* of those Americans, sure: the extremists, grifters, plutocrats, and cowardly GOP leadership. But "contempt" doesn't describe my feeling for the many citizens who are misinformed, scared, and manipulated into apathy or making suicidal political choices.
Nothing makes me think "I regret submitting to this journal" like review processes that needlessly drag on forever. Getting rejected is fine! Desk rejects even better. If you never get rejected, you're not aiming high enough. It's manuscripts that just sit. That'll have me swearing off that journal.
Author posted this as a dunk on liberal higher ed. But more striking to me is a future GOP more captured by "plutocratic populism." A growing % of GOP voters will be less educated, voting for policies that pay billionnaires who distract with racism & culture war.

People so intent on arguing America was founded as a "Christian nation" rarely want to pull quotes from enslaved or formerly enslaved Black Americans about what "Christian nation" mean to them. Usually it meant pointing out the irony of our "Christian" claims and evil behavior.
Here's David Walker.
They went to war with Iran (which nobody in America was asking for) so they could conjure an excuse to allow ICE to keep murdering Americans and teargassing schools here at home with impunity (which nobody in America was asking for).

Combination of the cultural influence of their leadership and faculty along with their huge enrollment (thus graduation thousands of pastors) and central place in the SBC, cant think of a more influential seminary.
In Louisville visiting family and couldnβt pass up visiting the most influential (for better or worse) seminary in the country. Made me want to enroll and do a multiyear ethnography.
Wonder if FIFA will take back their peace prize now? You know, to preserve the integrity of the prize.
What often gets missed in stories about declining birth rates is that they're due to declines specifically among young women. Young women are exercising reproductive autonomy and are making considered decisions about whether and when to have children.
This is a good thing.

Few feelings in academia more satisfying than seeing your PhD students get jobs they're excited about. It's a privilege to play a part.
Plane reading on a flight to Nashville this morning. This is the kind of book that I would hide inside a Playboy so as to avoid the judgment of my fellow passengers at my reading Pat Buchanan. Or worse, their approval.
Hoping for this here next November.
