And now the US will have to try and convince the Gulf States it spent decades trying to bring onside that it has their interests and security at heart and wasn't just using them as a buffer for Israel while the Israelis laugh on their own TV stations and tell Trump "One more run; Doha can take it!"

Everyone's laughing at the British expats complaining about how they moved to Dubai because they were told it was a delightful little capitalist utopia in a geopolitical prophylactic, and sure, hilarious. But one question: Where on earth did they get that idea from? Who told them that?

for what it cost for our allies to shoot down three of our own planes by accident in a murderous illegal war we could have funded the NEH at 150% of its historic peak funding for a year

Q&A: Kwaneta Harris on the Black History That Shaped Her "I am perceived as a Black woman before I am perceived as an American, before I am perceived as a journalist, before I am perceived as human."

"A guard said 'Happy James Earl Ray Day" on Dr. [Martin Luther] King’s holiday. Another asked whether Black people even celebrate Father’s Day β€” because 'they don’t know their fathers.' I was raised in Detroit, baptized in Black history. Entering a Texas prison was a cultural collision."

My latest, a collaboration between @propublica.org + @nytimes.com, is on the cover of today's New York Times Magazine.

The gift link leads you to the excellent audio version of the story by Julia Whalen:

My evidence professor, day one:
At Yale, the first thing they read in Evidence is Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Here, the first thing we read is Rule 403.

look if a Democrat wants me to be really fired up about voting for them, they will promulgate the Crimes Against Humanity Reparations Act which gives US citizenship to everyone targeted by the Trump administration.

One thing to understand is that jackasses like me graduated from law school basically believing that, while nothing like <all this> was realistic in our lifetimes, if it did happen, then our Supreme Court with all its flaws would respond roughly like this judge did, maybe 9-0.

The kidnappings are real. Murdering Caribbean fishermen is real. The concentration camps are real. The comms and marketing blurs the line between real and fake to get us to lump the horrors in with the film-flam.

Stacy Bradley voted for President Trump because of his border policies, and she likes that he has restored β€œlaw and order.” But she is unsettled by one aspect of his immigration agenda.

Last month, the federal government bought a warehouse next to her cheerleading gym in Surprise, Ariz., which the administration plans to convert into a detention center for up to 1,500 immigrants.

Ms. Bradley, the co-owner of Woodlands Elite Cheer, said she worried that a detainee could escape, or that protests could break out. The children who train at her gym are as young as 3 and could see β€œpeople in shackles” next door, she said.

The self-ownage cycle of republics: Given enough time, a republic will inevitably own itself so hard that it reverts back to the conditions that its founders were explicitly trying to escape.

Texas AG Ken Paxton issues new opinion on jail deaths to Tarrant County DA Attorney General Ken Paxton affirmed limits on when the state has to order an outside investigation into an inmate’s death.

Ken Paxton just unilaterally gutted part of the Sandra Bland Act, one provision of which required independent investigations of county jail deaths. Paxton ruled investigations needn't happen if a prisoner dies in a hospital, ambulance, etc., off jail grounds, so many cases now won't be investigated.

The irony, of course, is that the noblest legacy of Western Civilization is the pluralist liberalism that the pseudointellectuals yanking their marionette strings are so keen on destroying. Rawls and Hayek are heirs to that tradition; Patrick Deneen and Curtis Yarvin want to raze it.

Few things grind my gears quite as much as these fucking illiterates invoking β€œWestern Civilization,” of which they are obviously and comically ignorant, as a euphemism for white supremacy.

Prison-Style Free Speech Censorship Is Coming for the Rest of Us The outcome of a court case could decide whether the Trump administration can criminalize simply possessing political literature.

"While this censorship might seem brazenly anti-constitutional to most Americans, it has been the reality faced by incarcerated individuals for decades. In the name of 'security,' prison officials have punished and even killed people for possessing literature they deemed suspect." @theintercept.com

Homeland Security Wants Social Media Sites to Expose Anti-ICE Accounts

What’s funny is that in 2031, when the government seizes Elon’s servers and reporters are granted access to all the documentation of censorship and surveillance, the report will be called The β€œX” files.

US Olympic Curling Team member speaks out against ICE:

"I'm proud to represent Team USA. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been. What's happening is wrong. There's no shades of gray."

Correct. Recognizing that this is the correct strategic choice on February 10 does not mean you’re giving up introducing a bill to abolish ice next term.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but there was a time when it was illegal for Puerto Ricans to speak Spanish or wave the bandera. People were jailed and killed for it. So seeing the Puerto Rican flag at the Super Bowl isn’t just pride, it’s history, survival, & resistance. #Pinks #Momsky
